Are other edhat readers having issues with water on the Westside? It's a little murky and might have been shut off earlier today but without any notice.

Update by another edhat reader

Water main break on 1100 block W Valerio, street undermined and concrete separated from asphalt, water visible under cracks, water gushing,  traffic diverted,  police presence,  neighbors without water pressure.

Water Issues on the Westside?

RHS, You call it "willingness to dump on city public works people who are doing the best they can" when I am pointing out what we saw, incompetence, turned the wrong valve of the 2 in the street. Like my Grandpa used to say "They are doing their best, and you just found out their best is inadequate." At a high wage and pension plan WE pay for.

I am sure that private contractors would have done a better job (sarcasm). 777, your hostility to working people making a decent living and being offered a decent retirement distorts the reliability of any reported observation you make.

Why the willingness to dump on city public works people who are doing the best they can to deal with a corroded and antiquated infrastructure. Better complain would be to complain to the city council and city administrator who have consistently refused to prioritize replacement of the 100 year old pipes. Last time I heard they said they had a plan to replace 1% a year--so another century of absurdness. The politicians spent the money on the desalination boondoggle whereas a lot less spending could have saved about 7% of the city water every year that is now lost to leaks like this one.

I was the one who sent in the initial notification just after dark Monday. The rusted pipe busted open under West Valerio street, with much clanking and banging of metal pieces, and the City employee came and shut off the 8" pipe, the one that goes UP the street to Elings. It took them 90 minutes to come back to shut off the 12" THAT CARRIES THE WATER DOWNWARD, so that was a big waste of precious water. While my neighbor and I watched pretty much EVERY car that came up Valerio went around the police barrier, that said STREET CLOSED to uphill traffic, meaning we had an amazing display of idiocy as cars sped up the hill in the downhill lane, directly into the path of unsuspecting people coming down the hill. Finally the police came back and we asked them to either put more barriers up or divert traffic with a police car. As of 10:30AM Tuesday the water is still off and this is a huge repair, since a big volume of water was allowed to undermine the street for a very long time entirely because the City employee didn't know which valve to turn.

Water Issues on the Westside?

Interesting that only the north side (even numbers and my side) of the street is being affected. There was a similar water main break up the street from us about three or four weeks ago that released many thousand of gallons down the street for at least two hours before it was stopped. Perhaps that is why the city wants me to spend $15,000.00 to repair my "defective wye" where it connects to the main sewer in front of our house and no one on the other side of the street has been given that notification. I have heard this is a city scam to force homeowners to repair damage that they have created while cleaning out main sewer lines around town with high-pressure water hoses in preparation for lining these old sewer lines with plastic liners rather than replace them entirely. Has anyone received a similar notification that there wye is defective and needs to be replaced at their own cost? There is some talk of a class-action suit against the city in response to the "defective wye" scam.

Further investigations (with more neighbors!) - it's an upper/ lower thing, not an even-odd thing. I think it's mostly below Calle Canon.

A neighbor called public works. They are working on it and hope to have it back on by late morning or early afternoon. From polling my neighbors, seems to be the even side of W. Valerio, but not the odd side. Different water mains.

Water is still out at 8:45 am on upper West Valerio St; there has been no notification of the problem and when it will be resolved by the city or the public works department.

Well lets see - the biggest fire in CA history has burned just up the road from us - will our water taste like BBQ now for a while? Maybe be murky at times? Get a water filter or better yet move to a safer state (aka) your birthplace!

There was a major water flow on west Valerio and Calle Bolca del Canon at about 6:30 pm I don't know if there was a water main break or if the public works dept was flushing a hydrant.
