Phone Scam on Local Landlines

By an edhat reader

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing phone calls from folks asking why you have called them? We are constantly getting the “hi this is Dave” “you asked us to call you back” “your HVAC needs maintenance” “your car warranty”.

I’m just worried I could be linked to some type of scam and we are going to disconnect the landline but should I contact the police? Thank you for any suggestions or help.

  1. How annoying for you. I get a lot of spam calls that spoof a number that matches my phone number’s first 6 digits, e.g. 805-729-XXXX. They do it because people are more likely to answer a familiar looking number. Rest assured you have no liability here, authorities are well aware of the spoofing problem, they know the numbers that show up on caller ID are rarely truthful. There is nothing the authorities can do to help you stop this either, unfortunately.
