This is the third installment in our "Meet Your Mayoral Candidates" series. Every day this week we'll be featuring information and a video interview from our five applicants vying to be the next Santa Barbara Mayor in alphabetical order, because Ed does not take sides. All past candidates can be seen here. Today, we're featuring Angel Martinez, learn more about him below.

Angel graduated from UC Davis, where he was All-American in cross-country and track. Prior to being named the CEO of Deckers Outdoor Corporation in 2005, he served 21 years as the president and CEO of The Rockport Company, a subsidiary of Reebok. He left Deckers in 2016.

Angel currently serves on the boards of AHA! and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF).

The economic issues that plague downtown Santa Barbara are what inspired Angel to run for mayor. His desire to address transience and vacant storefronts are amongst his top priorities. He is also in favor of updating the police station and keeping taxes for citizens low.

Thank you Newsmakers with Jerry Roberts for conducting the interview and sharing the video with edhat readers.

No way. He says he grew up poor - then why does he take advantage of others?! He should not be representing Santa Barbara, he is not humane, not fair, and his prior work ethics speak volumes! Talk to people who know the inside story, talk about transparency, look at how he made his money and who suffered for it.

Martinez's right hand man spoke on Martinez and his company's behalf, and said Deckers didn't torture and cause excessive suffering for living things to make Decker's products, the people that supplied them the carcasses did that. It's like saying, "We don't beat our employees, our subcontractors do." We asked if they could tell their suppliers they would not purchase from them if they were so horrible and caused the animals such agony, and they said he could not do that, they were on the stock exchange.

Martinez is a: No Thought, No Substance and No Plan Candidate. Vote NO! I agree with SB County Local. How could you vote into Mayoral office a person who openly supported torturing animals, for his Decker's firm? Search Deckers and Uggs on Google with the word torture, and you will see article after article about this Martinez man's morals and practices that he supported and profited from as CEO of Deckers.

The other council candidates running for mayor: meh. Sorry, but you've been there 8 years, or 12 in Hal's case...and what have you got to show for it? I guess my position could best be summed as ABC: Anyone But Cathy, but having heard Martinez, I'm feeling positive about him. This guy is smart and you don't get that in City Council candidates, though Helene strikes me as clever. I like that he speaks Spanish and also economics. I like that he grew up poor, and then achieved the American Dream. I am a little worried about sanctuary city status and housing, but overall, he's far and away heads above the rest of the candidates.

He seems pretty thoughtful and I like that he came from being poor and made himself a success. Yes he made a lot of money. Great for him and great for us as he paid a ton of taxes, created jobs and now is willing to give of his most precious asset ( time) to try to help the community. he could easily sit out his year sipping drinks in a luxury resort but he is trying to help. I also like the idea of fiscal conservative. ( America is deeply deeply in debt and no one talks about the end game.) And yet we have real social problems that can only be solved by progressive ideas and not old hard line rules.

I think I’d like to see Hal or bendy. They seem to actually care about SB and not looking only at how they can make it even more “touristy”and “urbanity” while also becoming the sanctuary capital of California like some of our other candidates.

Anyone who promises to fix the Homeless problem get it in writing and if they are unable to do any thing about it sue them after all they promised.

I'm between him and Hal. But leaning toward Angel. Here is why: 1. Homeless. This city needs to take a hard stance against the homeless. There is not a one-size fits all approach to dealing the transient problem. And so far, he's the only one willing to admit that tough approach with some transients is necessary. 2. Housing. No one knows the impact of the housing crisis better than employers at the larger businesses in the area. Hiring experienced and skilled professionals is extremely difficult here due to the lack of affordable middle class and even upper middle class housing. This has nothing to do with high growth but rather sustaining and developing local industries which give back to the community. Thousands of residents (like myself) depend on the local industries to live and build our lives here. Angel Martinez is the only candidate who has this business experience remaining independent and socially liberal.

He is a shoe salesman....a shoe peddler...expensive shoes made for nothing in China and then flogged on the streets of the USA...no thanks....would rather support someone who does not support slave labor and big business....his base pay was $1.2 million plus another $4.5 in stock option...yeah, he is your average bloke scrapping by in lovely SB!

From his horrendous attitude toward the homeless and poor to his complete inability to understand what is truly a middle class family situation, this person is not suited to serve as mayor. At best his is a "noblesse oblige" request of the rich to throw a few crumbs to the rest of us. The community he imagines is one of "urbanites" couples working high paid on line jobs and living in small apartments and commuting by bicycle or electric car. He doesn't comprehend that someone is serving the food they eat, cleaning the streets, maintaining the infrastructure, nursing them when ill and otherwise doing the grunt work. We need a society in which these folks are represented in the community, not as commuters from Oxnard and Lompoc or as residents of the Santa Barbara Housing Authority (which Angel seems to think takes care of the need). His most arrogant idea is that because he was "successful" in private business he will be able to lead a democracy. Trumpism for sure.

Martinez is supported by large developers, many real-estate brokers, the Drunk Zone businesses and the short term vacation rental lobby. If we want to increase low wage jobs, to convert our housing stock to short term vacation rentals, or turn the downtown into one monstrous high rise after the other vote for him. He will help increase service and tourism jobs, get housing downtown (on the most expensive real-estate in the City by allowing 7 to 8 stories downtown for housing) and it still won't be affordable. - And he will implement his "Rescue Dollar" program for the homeless. A FAILED program that has been tried and FAILED in every City its been implemented. - Why would you implement a program that has never been successful? Easy question to answer: It's better than no plan, which is what I can say about Martinez. He has no plan but says that Santa Barbara is "Beautiful" in every other sentence. He is a: No Thought, No Substance and No Plan Candidate. Vote NO!

Mr. Martinez' sympathy and support of the horrendous Sanctuary City program negate any possible good he thinks he could do for the city. After Ms. Murillo, Mr. Martinez is the candidate to be feared.
