Death at the Harbor?

By an edhat reader

Does anyone know anything about a death at the Santa Barbara Harbor today? A friend just told me a body was found at Marina 3 but there hasn’t been more information.

  1. 4:29 – A) How do you know this was done on “public property?” B) You and we are not entitled to the details of every call for service, especially not when there is no present threat to others in the area. C) What do you use for pain management? It must be extremely physically painful to lack as much empathy and compassion as you seem to do.

  2. “ a body was found at Marina 3”
Was the person found on personal property? On a private boat?
    Do you know, Roger?
Don’t get worked up. If you don’t know if was on public or private property just say so.
Private property is private, but the media will get a hold of it as they always do.
The media is not kind and they do not respect people, they only care about ratings and stirring the pot.
If people want gossip they’ll get it from the Indy or another gossip column.
But you do report on scanner items from fights to everything and you’ve always reported what you’ve heard. If it hadn’t been stated on the scanner say so.
Or just own up to being a respectful person and not report on personal details, but do that for every situation.
You’ve created a place where you report on everything you hear on the scanner, are you reporting everything or holding back?
Just communicate with the people and they’ll understand where you’re coming from.

  3. Another reader sent this in as a question, and it’s a valid question, whether you reported it or not. Any large emergency response and people are allowed to ask what’s going on. All that needed to be said, which I think one reader did say, was it was a suicide, RIP. That’s all, no need to get upset over it. I saw this was discussed on reddit too.

  4. Suicides at Home do not get posted, nor do bodies found at home unless a crime is involved. Public suicides do get posted I post public suicides to warn people of the presence of a body that they may not want to see and also to clarify the cause of death from a potential Homicide to a Suicide. Not all people who get ran over by trains are suicides some are accidental..I NEVER REPORT SUICIDES THAT SOMEONE COMMITS IN THE PRIVACY OF THEIR HOME….OR BOAT. Those are NOT posted by me all the TIME.

  5. Hi Sac- it’s common human empathy. It’s normal for us to question and want to know on topics like this. mental health was destroyed under Regan. I had family working at Camarillo State Hospital. To hear that they just sent these people out into the world with no more care is awful. Suicide is heartbreaking. It takes a lot of thought, and emotional drain to push someone to this stage. I was not best buddies with the person, but knew each other. I think the reactions on this thread/post is a lot of people defending themselves and a lot of Roger back pedaling on facts. The post got lost in the mix. I see that Roger got Edhat to defend him and remove a bunch of posts. Go figure…lol. I partially agree with you that we are not entitled to know, but this is common and simple human curiosity. There were 1st responders, there were a lot of people around. I live near the harbor, and am there frequently. I know that place is always bustling with people. They all saw. Many people saw and with no one walking up to them telling them what happened, we begin to ask questions. It is sad. Its heartbreaking, but i personally don’t feel it’s wrong to inquire. I think things got heated up when Roger went on the defensive and well, it just got lame from there.

  6. Zero – sorry for your loss, I am. But, why does the whole world “deserve” to know what happened in an obviously very private and traumatic situation even if it happened on public property. If we weren’t there to see it, we really aren’t “entitled” to anything. Sad news, no need to make a deal about it.

  7. Why do people get so uptight about suicide? Maybe if you all would get over the “it’s personal” and the implied embarrassment, we can have a conversation about mental health and what kind of effect suicide has on the people left behind. It may not have been entirely public, but when someone dies by suicide or any other cause for that matter, people want to know and understand so they can work through their own emotions about it. The harbor is in a very public location and I am sure MANY people saw the first responders, and perhaps the coroner. Of course they want to know what happened. It is not out of curious joy, it is mostly out of curious empathy and possible remembrance of their own losses. If you take your life, you already know what people will say/speculate/see etc etc. The more you sweep things under the rug, the longer it takes to understand and work through them.
