What Happened to No Smoking Signs on State St?

By an edhat reader

Before the pandemic there were “No Smoking” signs in many places down State St. On many of the posts and most of the businesses had them on their front doors/windows.

Now they are almost entirely gone on the street and businesses We see(ugh-smell) visitors all the time smoking outside in the major sections on State St from the busy areas from 100 block to the 1400 block. I think I saw ONE sign about the 400 block the other day. What’s up with that?

  1. We don’t need more signage, we just need some enforcement. Just like everything else… It’s clear that, (I think?), all of SoCal is nonsmoking. But they’re not enforced like Jaywalking, legal status, street vending, and a dozen other things. For better or worse, we get what we pay for…?

  2. If you look like a sucker who has ID and will actually pay the fine, the police will cite you. Intentional vagrant? whats the point? The intentional vagrants are not going to stop smoking, they are not going to pay the fine, so why bother? Target the person who ducks out of work or out of the club for a smoke.
Not exactly equitable, but that is how it is today

  3. People are still smoking throughout the entire city of SB. I see it all the time when I am out and about. Not once I have ever seen a police officer(s) give out warnings or tickets since the banning of smoking in public. I guess it’s a not a priority to do so with city officials or for SBPD. Just think if the SBPD handed out tickets on a daily basis for those smoking in public, the city of SB would make mucho $$$$$$$$$$ pesetas. Get with it city staff, Mr. Mayor and city council members. That is an extra raise in your wallets!!
