Ventura County’s Naval Base at Point Mugu has been chosen by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a possible quarantine location for the novel-coronavirus (COVID-19)

HHS issued the below statement on Sunday about the potential use of Point Mugu for quarantine of those infected with COVID-19.

“The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), working closely with the Department of Defense and other federal partners, is taking all reasonable steps to address an evolving public health emergency.

As part of that effort, Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) – Point Mugu may receive American travelers coming through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) who, in an abundance of caution, would be quarantined to be monitored for symptoms of COVID-19 based solely on their travel history. Any travelers housed at the Base would be monitored for signs of infection and transferred to appropriate medical facilities if symptoms developed.

The Department of Defense has made sites available around the country to house such travelers, and NBVC-Point Mugu was one site determined to be suitable for travelers requiring quarantine.

At this time, HHS is preparing this site should it be needed in the rapidly evolving public health response. Any actions that HHS takes, working with federal, state, tribal and local partners to address this public health emergency, are being done in a way that protects both those quarantined and other citizens as well.

Imported cases of COVID-19 from a small number of travelers have been detected in the U.S. but this virus is NOT currently spreading in U.S. communities and the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time. “

A Community Info Session is scheduled Monday, Feb. 24, 6:30 p.m. at the Pt. Mugu Theater.

  1. Let’s try this again. People confuse the number of flu deaths with flu mortality. Flu mortality is about 0.1% of the people that get it (many people get it). So far, COVID-19 mortality is about 3% of the people that get it. COVID-19 is 30 times more lethal than the flu and if it becomes widespread and maintains that lethalness, it is going to be bad. That is why people are so scared.

  2. In the meantime: We’re being told to wash hands to prevent picking up coronavirus. Do how doctors/nurses do: (1) Soap up hands. (2) Rub palm to palm. (3) Rub between fingers. (4) Rub both thumbs. (5) Rub back of each hand. (6) Rub fingertips of each hand. (7) Pat dry with paper towel. (8) Turn tap off using paper towel. This is from another thread.

  3. No, that is not the case. The virus is less lethal than the flu, but significantly more contagious. The infectious period is longer and asymptomatic, so people will spread the virus to many others before they even know they have it. Severity is mild for most people, and lethal for sensitive populations (much like the flu). Even though the lethality is lower than flu, contagiousness makes up for it and will lead to more deaths overall due to the sheer number of infected. A Harvard epidemiologist is predicting that it is likely that 40-70% of the world’s population will be infected within the next year.

  4. You are completely safe if you stay at home. Make plans now to spend more time at home, eat out less, don’t be in crowds, inside or outside. Find out if you can entertain yourself over days, or even weeks, at home. Books, playing cards, puzzles, magazines, internet, gardening, trying out new recipes, housework, tv, lots of paper for doodling, treats for stress eating.

  5. True. You could declutter closets & drawers (if you have garbage boxes), paint rooms (if you have paint & brushes), fix leaking faucts (if you have tools & supplies), clean old grout w/a toothbrush–wait! What about keeping kids out of school and having your job just deposit your check in your absence? Friends, “Little House on the Prairie” isn’t an option anymore. Neither is expecting people to eat the cost of cancelled travel or even cover coughs properly & wash their hands. We live through this whatever the loss of life or not. Globalization made isolationism impossible. Think about this in enviornmental terms. We our “brothers” keepers, like it or not.

  6. PTMIX: the gowth of the federal government is driven solely by Democrats an their public sector union buddies: SEIU, AFSCME, NEA, AFT. ..etc…etc. Get on board and stop lying about what in fact drives the growth of government and the growing federal debt – entitlement programs combined; not the military. Be wiling to reform Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid and we will finally take a step in the right direction. It is the right thing to do, if those in the future are to enjoy the benefits in someway or another. Reform, not “take away” benefits. Reform them. Take the partisan hysteria out of reforming these programs and you will see the size and costs of government start shrinking – but that comes with loss of public sector union member dues going to union bosess and fueling Democrat campaigns. There in hangs the tale. And that is why Democrats scream every time there are threats to any part of these government union-dues producing entitlement programs. Get on board – blaming someone else does not cut it.

  7. “This is a non-issue.” This is you in the near future: https://apnews.com/4fe2b4075638d59a180f354fc90caf93 ‘The head of an Iranian government task force on the coronavirus who had urged the public not to overreact about its spread has tested positive for the illness himself, authorities said Tuesday, as new cases emanating from the country rapidly emerged across the Middle East.
Only a day earlier, a coughing and heavily sweating Iraj Harirchi said at a televised news conference in Tehran that “the situation is almost stable in the country.”’

  8. An acquaintance recently traveled out of the country to the continent of Asia. They are now ill after returning. While it’s a silm chance it’s the coronaviris it is a reminder that with international travel we increase the risk of disease when there are outbreaks elsewhere. Saying that this is a trivial matter is far from the truth. 2% of those infected die. What would the % be if hospitals were overrun and medical supplies low or unavailable? Higher? Most likely. This could get much much scarier.

  9. 2 Things really bothersome about this: 1) Minimal advance warning for public input and outrage… so that communities don’t rise up and reject the govt. decision, and 2) Pt Magu over Camp Roberts? Really? The community populations are vastly different. So they chose the vastly more populated location… of course: Ventura. Camp Roberts is in the middle of nowhere. Or maybe they don’t care about the potential of it spreading in the Ventura area because of the demographics?? I don’t know but this does not make sense. Maybe the oil&gas money in the Camp Roberts area didn’t want this disease to affect their operations. Lots of guessing, but I always try to follow the money. Costa Mesa has lotsa mula. Oil&Gas have lotsa mula. Maybe agriculture not so much.

  10. Pt. Mugu is easy access from LAX, so it makes sense. The virus mushroomed in South Korea and Northern Italy rather quickly. Both places immediately went into lockdown. The shelves in grocery stores in Milan went bare in a day. Those people need to hunker down at home for a couple weeks. I don’t know if it will come to that here, but now is the time to think about having enough essentials on hand in case you need the city gets shut down a couple weeks. It’s just like being prepared for an earthquake.

  11. San Francisco Mayor London Breed declared a local state of emergency due to the coronavirus today (Tuesday) . There are no confirmed cases of the virus in San Francisco. “By declaring a state of emergency we are prioritizing the safety of our communities by being prepared,” Mayor Breed said. “Our number one goal is the health and safety of all our residents.”

  12. This is a non-issue. What is this hair-trigger hysteria that makes so many feel thier government is out ot get them. and their lives are in imminent peril. Very confusing – this area brags they are progressive and love big government in every aspect of their lives; yet turn on the dime and trust nothing the government is doing after then hand government unfettered powers. Start voting like you distrust government; instead of continually turning your lives over to this dominant, super-majority one-party state.

  13. Ventura makes much more sense. If this accelerates and becomes a pandemic, or even before, there’s a serious danger: this virus is extremely contagious — and just think of the large port that is LA, airport as well as sea! Probably most airplanes arriving there and many passengers are unknowingly affected. There will need to be a quarantine location that’s reasonably close to LA. There should be on in the Bay area, as well.

  14. Why would we even believe China for a second on anything? The only fool who does that is Trump. Even “his generals” know a professional puppet master at work on their Liar-in-Cheat. Hah! Heck, he even doubts his intelligence experts regarding all things in the world because his a”stable genius.” Hah!

  15. GOP: small government. Democrats: big government. Libertarians: no government. Take your pick. Use this test: does a government program create more dependency on the government, or does it relieve dependency on the government. Public health and safety is a legitimate role for a government to play. Micromanaging the details of daily lives and even one’s private thoughts is clearly excess government. Running fool’s errands for two years solely for partisan gain is out of control government. Vote for the candidate who best expresses small, but effective, government. That is definitely Caldwell over Carbajal.

  16. Yes, Raygun and the current Republican King have done so much to decrease the size of the government, military, and budget. If you are going to argue consarvative (nothing about your party is conservative) talking points, try to pick some that are actually accurate. The only accurate one for you these days is that you will make your rich donors richer.

  17. Rwelsh. Ever thought maybe the travel distance from LAX to Ventura is shorter. Allowing less chance of an accident to further spread the disease? Additionally, advanced medical care is more widely available closer to the big city.

  18. 3:07, yes, cons always want to spend more on defense and gut the social programs. Every great nation in history has struggled with paying for defense of their empire or improving the lives of their citizens. Our day of reckoning is coming. Spending more on defense than the combined other top 7 countries is nuts. Or are we so incompetent that we can’t spend efficiently in this area?
