Found this creature at the harbor in Santa Barbara. It appeared to be dead as it was very rubbery yet slightly stiff and did not move while my friend was handling it, very gently. Do you have any idea what it is?

It’s a sea slug, by any other name!
When in doubt, return sea creatures to their natural habitat ASAP. There are a great many critters that “play dead” when handled. Never assume inactive creatures won’t suddenly recover when restored to their normal environment.
