Nude Beach??

I'm relatively new to the area, lived here almost three years, and somehow I just recently stumbled upon the local nude beach. I have visited More Mesa a handful of times this past week I decided to go for a longer jog to explore the area. I was pretty surprised when I stumbled upon several nude men relaxing on the beach.

I've lived in Europe where it's common so I wasn't shocked by it, more so impressed as Americans tend to be more reserved. I asked my co-worker and they said it's been known as the nude beach for as long as they can remember. Do edhatters know the history of this beach or is it more of an unofficial title?

Sincerely,
Clothed but Curious

I think it's unofficial. I've been here since the mid-90s, and I've probably known about it the whole time. Not so much of an issue on Saturday mornings when I take the kids...

LETMEGO. You're late to the party. More Mesa nude beach has been clothing optional since the early '70s or even prior to that.

Any beach is a nude beach if you're brave enough

It has been unofficial nude since at least 1970 when I arrived.
I think I recall reports of arrests having been made there for indecent exposure years ago, but not sure if memory is accurate.

Nude beaches in the US are usually for creepers, not like Europe.

I've have been here since 1975. At the time we had about a dozen nude beaches including More Mesa. We even had a wonderful nude beach on the Mesa. As the population increased a new family would come across the nude beach [much like you did] but some had a problem with that experience. Complaints were made to the police and politicians and over time many of the nude beaches "faded" away. Now we have a few left and you ran across one of them.

BTW - I am not sure if your last comment was asking this but no nude beach in Santa Barbara is a legal nude beach.

Don't lay to close to the cliffs some times the creeps like to make it rain.

Don't lay too close to the cliffs some times the cliffs like to make it rain...rock. You would not be the first to die this way.

Agree w/Roger, would like to add that I ride that "Cliff trail" & have come across "Peeps". More often than not they'll have binoculars & camera w/rather large lenses. Just say'n. Also have been on that beach with mostly very nice humans!

BICYCLIST- Yes, creepy peeps on the cliffs were/are always unnerving. We just chose to ignore and enjoy a lovely beach. Naked but generally tame.

Those are called "bushwhackers" as they stand off somewhere within sight and....

I’ve been going to the past 30 years with my parents when we were kids. They are all unofficial but there is one is Summerland and Gaviota. The beach even has an unelected mayor who we the “cell phone police.”

minibeast has it right - have been in town since the 60s and More Mesa was already a well established nude beach. the trail down would get washed out and was pretty sketchy from time to time and you could always get there with a good beach walk.

I think it's mostly old dudes now. I remember back in 1971, when I first stumbled upon it, it was very active. It looked like mostly college aged kids. Volleyball and everything!

I took some young tourist women from Switzerland there in the 70's.
Everything was going well until one of the girls ran into the water, hit her shin on a rock and broke her lower leg bones.
We all carried her... naked, yelling in pain... to the top of the bluff and took her to Cottage hospital.
Their 5 day stay in SB turned into 6 weeks at my house

"Several nude men relaxing on the beach" should tell you everything you need to know about that beach.

I used to go to "cemetery beach" - east of east beach below the cemetery. This was late 70s early 80s. I now avoid the sun, so don't know its status.

It visited More Mesa when I was at UCSB in 1970. Always quiet, few problems. The locals shoo away the inevitable cliff gawkers. Gaviota was closed to nude use about 5 years ago. There is another one at the far northern end of Bates Beach to the south. Nudists are harmless and self-policing as a rule. Behavior is the key. The police tolerate those who are just there to enjoy the sun and water and who dont bother anyone else. If you dont want to see it, don't go there.

In the 1970's the sheriffs would take Polaroids from the cliff above the Summerland nude beach and then walk down to give citations. Some of which could result in having to register as a sex offender for life. Crazy. I gave up swimming naked and made a flesh-colored bikini and sewed fur on the snatch and glass taxidermy eyes on the nipples, so when they took the photo they thought they had me but when they got to the beach I had thwarted their plan.

The sheriff still sends a pair of deputies down to More Mesa once a year or so to scare everyone with a ticket or two and to harass any gay couples they find. Enjoy the beach but always stay alert!
It is important everyone respect the neighbors up on Mockingbird Lane that we walk through to get to the beach. They are very tolerant of the nudists, and we want to not cause parking or trash problems for them.

More Mesa was very active when I was supervisor, '72-'76. I swam and tanned there all the time. The sheriffs raided the beach now and then and tried to photo me to create a "scandal." The debate within the board of supervisors continued for many years after U left the board. When Susan Rose was 2nd district supe, she asked the sheriff to ignore the beach. A guy from County flood control built the stairway on his own before the '70s. The parks director quietly sent a truck now and then to clean the beach ––but actually it was always clean because the bathers were rigorous about taking away their trash. It was great, with children and old folks of all ages. And volleyball.

Pretty much all of our local "nude" beaches appear to be for men only. There may be a smattering of females, but I'd say 95-98% male dominated. In Europe, and many other countries, it's very common to have topless beaches, and almost nowhere orvery rarely are the euro-type public beaches bottomless. About 20 years ago I saw a younger man dressed in full camo creepin' about above the cliffs near Bate's Beach (I think that's the name of it). My guess he was either bird watching or "bird" watching.

Those guys above Bates are long gone. We created a Beach Ambassador program of volunteers to make sure the lewd and drug activity was removed from the area. The nude section remains there, and it is very benign these days. There is also a multi-million dollar project scheduled for the hill above Bates, extending a hiking and bike trail up from Ventura to Carpinteria, so any lewd activity will be bulldozed away. Hearing underway, look on the City web site for info.

Nude beaches in the 70s many beaches north before Gaviota and still are,Mesa Lane suities to the left, nuddies to the right, or anywhere on a full moon, cemetery, Bates and Summerland, that was the worst for creeps on the hill, i used to go there for a swim after work. My solution was a wrist rocket and a pile of rocks by my towel. Worked really well.

Also most of the pools and hot springs in the mountains were clothing optional
