John Dungan Sentenced to 45 Years-Life for Triple Fatal 154 Collision

By the edhat staff
John Dungan was sentenced to three consecutive 15-years-to-life prison sentences for intentionally causing a vehicle collision on Highway 154 that killed three people.
The Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office announced he was convicted of three counts of second-degree murder this August.
Prosecutors stated that Dungan was driving 119 mph into oncoming traffic on October 25, 2019. They argued he intentionally crashed his Chevy Camaro into a Chevy Volt carrying Vanessa Bley and her two children.
Bley and her 2-year-old Lucienne Bley Gleason and 4-month-old Desmond Bley Gleason were killed instantly.
"Dungan set off a chain of events that showcased the most despicable and downright evil display imaginable," said Stephen Wagner, Deputy District Attorney for Santa Barbara County. "His actions were methodical and meticulously executed."
Bley's family requested three consecutive sentences representing each life that was taken.

Sep 20, 2022 08:11 PMHow old is he now? Will he serve the full sentence, at least 45 years? My thanks to the prosecutors and, earlier, the jury, who dealt with this dreadful crime.

Sep 21, 2022 08:11 AMIn today's world, you cannot help those who will not accept the help, and the ACLU is unfortunately working overtime to perpetuate this reality under the argument of civil rights. ACLU has missed the mark big time with this effort.

Sep 21, 2022 09:18 AMThe ACLU has almost single handedly created our homeless problem. It is shameful that this country let's truly mentally ill people fend for themselves on the streets , which also endangers the population. People are quick to blame then governor, Reagan, but it was the pressure of the ACLU. DISGRACEFUL!!!

Sep 21, 2022 09:29 AM7:35am - yeah I thought this case had some element of mental illness. What person in their right mind would do this? Such a tragedy for that family. I can't even imagine. If this wasn't due to mental illness, then it's evidence of the presence of pure evil in our society.

Sep 21, 2022 01:45 PM9:18AM: As much as I despise the ACLU for consistently standing up for murderers and gang members at the expense of the general public, they're mostly just trying to decriminalize homelessness. Look at the details of the homelessness precedent they set, which is that homeless can "sleep rough" on the streets IF there is not an adequate number of shelter space for them. No one remembers this but Reagan didn't just get rid of mental institutions, his "reform" was supposed to create a viable alternative and guarantee people some minimum level of treatment. He didn't even try to do that. I don't really blame him though, are we really supposed to expect budget funds and substantive effort applied to a niche issue from a politician who had little to no substance? Instead we get people with mental issues and Vietnam vets w/ PTSD having the streets and county jails as their treatment. Reaganites blame it on the LibErAlS or ACLU but as usual with problems they whine about, their D in high school civics doesn't serve them very well.

Sep 21, 2022 04:21 PMMARCELK, I don't fully agree with that person's comment, but look it up. The ACLU is not all puppies and rainbows and feel-good cases. They often take defend extremely narrow views that do not benefit society on the whole. They have done and continue to do a lot of good, but it is really sad that they continue to use their deep pockets to fight against problems like getting folks who are undeniably suffering from mental illness on the streets into mandated drug and mental health programs. The hospitals Reagan closed were not good, but the alternative is, also, not good. It is heartbreaking to see folks totally out of their minds on the street and yes, ACLU is partially to blame for the lack of forward movement.

Sep 21, 2022 08:12 AMDoes this mean eligible for parole on 45 years? But no chance of early release, right? I wish the DA would explain these things for such a high profile case, people do care about these details. Anyone know?

Sep 21, 2022 10:12 AMNo. He does not deserve the appeals death penalty cases afford, nor would it be right to put the surviving husband/father of the victims through that. Let him rot in prison.

Sep 21, 2022 09:46 AMI feel sorry for this guy. Mental illness is a curse and a life destroyer. It’s a shame the police couldn’t get to him in time to prevent his intentional head-on with the woman and her children. It seems to me an appropriate placement would be Napa State Hospital, California’s facility for the criminally insane.

Sep 21, 2022 10:03 AMNot all atrocities can be chalked up to "mental illness."
Some people are simply born a "depravity according to Nature."
To wit: Richard lll, Claggart, Iago.

Sep 21, 2022 10:10 AMCriminal insanity has an incredibly high bar, this case comes nowhere near it. This dude was stalking women for years and mistreating his family for years before this happened. This was not a moment of insanity, he was completely aware of what he was doing and the meaning of what he was doing. The guy is deranged and does not belong in society. I will never feel sorry for him.

Sep 21, 2022 11:05 AMI thought that there was no 'death penalty" in California.
Or it an empty gesture unless it keeps him out of the general population of other prisoners.
And i not follow the story much.
Is there any bio data on the guy?
ie a product of local schools? or even a native of SB?
medical history?
