Illegal Dumping?

By an edhat reader

I’ve been noticing a lot of junk left on the curb, including large furniture, throughout downtown Santa Barbara. What can be done about this? Is this legal in SB, or illegal and not being enforced?

  1. I’ve lived DT for awhile now and have definitely noticed an increase in junk and trash by the side of the road. I can’t even drive down the street anymore without seeing junky furniture, mattresses, you name it. Looks like Mexico or some 3rd world country frankly now. Says alot about the type of people who are now living here. They don’t seem to care about how their neighborhoods look. Family comes from out of town and they think this is the trashy area of town and really it’s not just b/c it’s not cheap to live here, but that is what it looks like. Like a ghetto.

  2. I am a “Santa Barbara resident of old” and thinking we would not have “stooped” to picking up reusable furniture sounds like maybe we were snobs. I can’t think of any reason we residents from “the old days” would have been any different from ones today. A bargain is a bargain and free is the ultimate bargain.

  3. So according to you Mexico is a 3rd world country that looks like a getto…It says alot about the type of people living here Will there are alot of us types of people living here maybe you ought to find a place where your type of people live.

  4. You might ask yourself why it bothers you so much. Personally, I don’t mind it if the stuff has been placed there for community re-use or Marbourg pick-up as long as it doesn’t sit out for more than a week. I haven’t seen many lasting that long within the City. I used to live in a rural part of town where people did come to litter all the time. I once found a pig carcass among other large items. People would come to drink beer in their car and toss cans out the window. Now THAT drove me crazy!

  5. Times have changed. I don’t believe Santa Barbara residents of old would stoop to picking up free used furniture off the side of the road. Is the furniture truly re-usable? Or is it truly trash? (I saw a furniture delivery truck dump pretty soiled two mattresses into a ravine off of 150, recorded license plate and called CHP and CalTrans and got nowhere. They sat there for over 2 years before they were picked up.)
We’ve all been there, trying to get rid of unwanted large items. As others have said, if you live in Marborg service area call them! Also, I have used “Habitat for Humanity” – if the condition is good they will send a truck out to pick it up for you.
