  • Three consecutive nights of fireworks that sound more like gunshots have traumatized our beloved dog. Please help us stop this. The police and fire departments will not help unless we pinpoint the location. More than ever we need peace, respect and consideration in a troubled world.

  • More fireworks on the Westside the past few nights. Annoying AF

"Annoying AF" boy do I agree. These rude pranksters have gotten smart too and only set off one per night so they can't really be caught. The Westside ones are going off very near to Robbins/Mission every time, it seems.

OP: We are utterly and passionately sympathetic with you on this. Our present dogs have (nearly) zero issues with loud noises. In the past, however, we had a dog that once tried to launch herself out an upstairs window, thanks to fireworks. Our neighbors were setting off small fireworks (no special holiday) and had no compunctions with continuing to do so, even after we begged them to stop. ------- There used to be a woman who worked with the fire department and said we should call her during any fireworks activity within the City of Santa Barbara. Try asking the SBFD if she's still on the job.

Yep there were a lot of fireworks last night. Heard it over the scanner, specifically the westside and eastside neighborhoods. Even the police heard some. One on the westside was mistaken as a gunshot, but the police in the area corrected advising that it was a firework.

Sounds like it needs to be brought up at City Council meetings. Best way to get action and pressure on police to stake it out is to gather a group here to all be present at the same meeting and request to speak. If you have enough people and give the same message, they will organize something.

I can relate, my poor dog! This time of year I have to put on the white noise, shut the windows and sedate my dog, just to avoid him being too traumatized. 2020 was awful, last year and this haven't been on that level so far, knock on wood.

Has anybody had success with the "Thunder Coat".
My Baussie hated fire works when she was a puppy, but is now to old or deaf to care(15)

Time for Santa Barbara residents to start putting together community-based groups look after our neighborhoods together and to put some pressure on law enforcement and elected officials to take action. LE can's stop these turds from lighting off fireworks, graffiti, catalytic converter theft, vandalism and other crimes plaguing our neighborhoods and screwing up the quality of life here. LE is understaffed and have to prioritize. We don't have to be victims, and as a group we'd have more impact when bringing out grievances to the powers that be.

Fireworks can cause fires. Duh. Our area hasn't had enough rain for years--it's dry. The number of windy days has increased substantially. Could this possibly be news to anyone? Make unlicensed possession and use of fireworks a criminal offense that carries a fine and a community service job cleaning up litter & debris while housed by the county for several years before some mental-case burns down a housing tract or two.

It already is a criminal offense, are you proposing more laws to make it more illegal?

If you can plan, as at July Fourth, you can have your pet safely inside and screened away by background noises and pulled curtains, but these untimed huge bangs cannot be planned for and can even mean death for pets that get frightened by the sound and get onto a busy street. We are lucky as our dog isn't worried, but the next door neighbor's dog will bash out of the house and even out of its yard and go get itself lost, in terror. And cats that aren't brought in at night and are frightened by the sound can disappear and never be found again.

As far as the Fourth, I understand that fireworks can be ordered from [China] that have little or no noise. It just depends what is packed into the firework. Many cities have almost bang-less displays, much better for pets - and for poor Animal Control, which is overwhelmed with lost pets after the fireworks are over.

Nicoyaspa, good idea, how do we go about doing this? LE/SBPD is down by 20 officers and we in District 1 have a representative is more absent than present and even when at the council meetings, she does nothing for neighborhood nuts and bolt issues, quality of life such as fireworks....

Almost every night between 10PM-midnight the sound of 1-3 fireworks echo through Valerio Canyon on the Westside. I used to think they were gun shots, but have been assured that they are "just fireworks." Except we are surrounded by dry brush on the hillsides, and in Elings' Park. They are SO LOUD !!!! None of my animals care, but I worry about the fire danger. This has been going on for many months, because of the way the sound echoes I can't pinpoint where they are being exploded.

as a dog owner/trainer/K9 handler and lover of fireworks. Let me be super duper clear for you. The rest of the city/county/state/country isn't going to change things because your dog isn't trained properly and/or is just afraid of loud noises. While my dogs are trained to accept gun shots and explosions, not all dogs are. This falls on the dog parents now. If you know your pooch is afraid of the noise, then it's on you to coddle, cuddle, lock up, or whatever is best for your dog. But don't try to change the world. Not going to happen. We also won't be ordering special fireworks so your dog is more calm. I mean really people....there are far bigger problems on the globe that your doggie getting frightened or doing stupid things while frightened, of loud noises.
My 2nd malinois just didn't like the explosions and gun pops. He got to anxious and nervous. I would sit with him in the bathroom during the fun and hold him and talk to him. Did i get up on my soapbox and expect the rest of the planet to change for the sake of my dog? Nope. Nor should you. I know this will anger some and i really don't care. reality hurts sometimes. stop acting overentitled and realize there are thousands of things that can scare an animal.
I don't see any of you protesting people hiking on trails in the forest. That is where wild animals live. They don't like our scent, sound, and garbage, but i'm not going to try to get people to stop hiking. Right?
Also the CC doesn't care, they too have bigger things going on than a few fireworks being popped off. I know people with severe PTSD from combat. They live in town. They aren't marching around beating a drum because THEY (humans) can't handle the explosions. No, they take care of themselves during the event to prevent themselves from going sideways. Ok, now i've stated fact, let the hate responses and shamers and downvotes begin....(and guess what? i'm not returning to the thread, i say my piece then move on BC i know you folks just look for things to bicker about and especially if it comes from me, you'll dog pile on.

ZERO - once again, truly the Voice of Reason. Loud noises happen folks, we can't expect humanity as a whole to quiet down. Garbage trucks dropping cans, airplanes flying low, helicopters, car backfires, lawn mowers, rocket launches, unexpected fireworks, the list goes on..... All of these are sudden and unexpected noises that dogs have to deal with. Sure, an entire fireworks show is prolonged, loud and frightening to dogs, but you have plenty of warning for those.
