Update: The identity of the surfer has been released. Read the updated article here.

The body of a surfer was discovered in the ocean off Mesa Lane in Santa Barbara on Wednesday afternoon.

The Santa Barbara City Fire Department reports the authorities responded to the scene around 12:15 p.m.

Good Samaritans reportedly discovered a floating surfboard in the water and found the body of a surfer nearby and brought it to the beach.

No further information about the identity of the surfer or the circumstances surrounding their death has been released.

However, the National Weather Service issued several weather alerts this week that includes dangerous surf, life-threatening rip currents, and coastal flooding.

The weather service’s warning also included people stay out of the water due to these dangerous conditions.

  1. just heard that there was possibly a note found at the beach. the entire thing is weird. one of the people who found him and pulled him from the water was arrested on site for a warrant. a note was supposedly found on the beach (not confirmed). Also, as Alex noted, the swells were not very big on Wednesday. Also, Mesa lane isn’t very good for surfing unless you like a lot of kelp and small waves. Could have drifted from Hendry’s someone said, no, this guy was a surfer. Hendrys has crap waves and nothing but rock bottom. It’s quite a mystery really….
