Cameras to Provide Updated Vehicle, Bicycle and Pedestrian Counts

If you notice new cameras installed at intersections throughout Goleta, it’s all part of the City’s effort to update traffic counts city-wide. Approximately 100 cameras were placed this week on existing light and signal poles at most city intersections. The cameras will track the latest vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian counts. The information will be used to better understand traffic impacts and assist with the design of future capital projects. The cameras will be up for approximately two weeks.

In addition to providing updated information on traffic volume, bike use, and pedestrian use, the data will be included in the upcoming City Development Impact Fee Study. The study takes existing traffic volumes and projected traffic volumes (based on approved and planned developments) and runs it through the Goleta Traffic Model to identify the capital projects necessary to accommodate the projected growth.

The cameras are not conducive to detecting traffic violations and will only be used for the purposes of traffic counting.
