Anyone An Expert on Honeybees?

By an Edhat reader:

The other day when I nearly walked into the orb weaver web, I came upon something else never seen before in my yard.

A “mound” of honeybees was largely motionless on the grass.  There is not a nest hole there and I never saw bees here before. The mound was about the size of a cereal bowl – roughly 7″ round by 2-3″ deep just plopped on top of the grass.  Close inspection revealed that many were “feeling” one another with their antennae and the mound gave the appearance to be slightly “vibrating” from their motion.

The next day they were gone, but I notice a small number reappearing this afternoon in the same spot.

Any apiarists among you who can clue me in?
