Animal, vegetable or mineral?

A few months ago, this thing showed up in our yard, and we have no idea what it is.  We are guessing it was dropped by a crow, but not sure.  It is about 1.5” in diameter when closed, and 3” when open.  When dry, it curls closed.  When it gets wet (from rain or heavy dew), it unfurls and opens.  It seems kind of leathery, but we can’t tell if it is actually leather or part of a plant.  Maybe it came from the ocean? Anyone know what this is?  Or better yet, any one missing one of these?  Thanks!

It looks like a either a flower or type of marine life. How *fun* to learn it is a fungus. And aren't your Crows just so sharing with you? All I seem to get are those tiny fast food containers (jam, syrup, salsa, etc) and ketchup packets left by my birdbaths. Someone near me really loves their processed to-go condiments.

Earthstar! First time I saw one of those I was pretty sure it arrived from outer space. So strange! When they open, it's an explosion of dust-like spores.

It's a cool mushroom! Genus is Geastrum, common name geostar! I see them along my driveway.

Wow -- thanks! I never would have guessed that was a type of fungus. Thanks so much -- we really were stumped!
