Woman and Dog Die in Head-on Highway 1 Collision

On 09/17/2018, at approximately 1530 hours, a fatal traffic collision occurred on State Route 1 south of Jalama Road. The California Highway Patrol (CHP), Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and American Medical Response ambulance company responded to the collision scene.  A 1996 Toyota 4Runner, driven by Elaine Ventura of Lompoc, was traveling northbound on State Route 1.  A 2004 Ford Van, driven by Juan Romero Jr. of Santa Barbara, was traveling southbound on State Route 1.  For an unknown reason, Ms. Ventura made an unsafe turning movement allowing her vehicle to drift into the southbound lane of State Route 1.  Her vehicle then collided head on with the Ford van.  As a result of the collision Mr. Romero was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, via helicopter, due to major injuries.  Ms. Ventura succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by the on duty medical professionals.  

 CHP issued a Sig Alert and State Route 1 was closed in both directions for approximately three and a half hours, while CHP officers conducted the on-scene portion of this traffic collision investigation. The collision remains under investigation at this time. It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision.

A woman and her dog were killed instantly during a head-on traffic collision on Highway 1 Monday afternoon.

At 3:35 p.m., Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to a vehicle accident just south of Jalama Road. They found two vehicles had collided head-on. 

One vehicle was a work van with a single male occupant traveling southbound. He sustained major injuries and was flown to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital via Calstar Helicopter. 

The second vehicle was a 4-runner traveling northbound that was driven by a vehicle with a small canine inside. They were both killed on impact, reports SBC Fire Department Public Information Officer Mike Eliason. 

California Highway Patrol (CHP) shut down the freeway during their investigation, which is ongoing.
