Teen Vaping and Smoking
By an edhat reader
I am hearing more and more about the increasing use of nicotine products among teenagers (specifically Juuls). Teens are supposed to be too young to buy Juuls but are getting ahold of products like this somewhere and using.
Does anyone know how prevalent this is locally and where kids are using their products? What's being done to curb use? - Any local programs trying to prevent vaping? - Finally, what do people think of products like Juuls being described as a gateway drug for cigarettes? - I have heard that cigarettes will be cheaper once people are hooked and money is tight. Does that sound reasonable or just crazy?

Jun 18, 2019 08:50 AMjust because an item has a flavor that automatically makes it marketed to teens? I dont get the idea that an adult item ( 18+ ) needs to be flavored as dirt, or asscrack. in order to be differentiated between adult activities and teen activities. so while we are complaining that there is an adult item you can buy flavored like cereal., IGNORING the fact that kids are purchasing and using an item regulated for 18+, IGNORING the fact that parents are not teaching the difference here. IGNORING the fact that regardless of flavors, these things will still be "tried". Regulate in your own home first before barking to have more regulation put on everyone else, everyone else that seems to be able to tell the difference between 18 and over.

Jun 17, 2019 01:12 PMCrazy that our government would allow nicotine products to be marketed to kids. Supposed to be more addictive than cocaine, right? Adults are supposed to protect kids until they are old enough to make their own decisions. We're not doing a very good job.

Jun 16, 2019 08:08 PMI do not understand why kids, or anyone of any age, starts vaping or smoking. It's expensive, and everyone knows it's bad for you. Is this not common knowledge? I figure anyone under about age 60 has had fair warning that tobacco kills. Older folk may have gotten hooked years ago, but new users are just dumb. Sorry, I know that's not nice of me, but I just don't get it.

Jun 16, 2019 12:59 PMIt would be great if kids could get more exercise in school. There should be exercise and PE several times throughout each day.

You do realize that kids have to change into appropriate exercise wear for P.E. classes? Then they need to shower after any type of sweat-inducing or pool swimming type activity. How long a day do you think these kids should put in? If I had my way, parents would stop coddling their kids by driving them anything less than a mile each way to school. Have kids take the bus or buy them Metro bus passes. We walked to school and back every single day as kids. When we got a bit older, we rode our bikes. Part of the reason a lot of kids are fat is due to this bizarre obsession parents have to act as chauffeurs, shuttling their kids everywhere. Granted, there are predators out there. Kids should always walk at least 2-3+ in a group. Teach your children safety measures, buy them pepper spray if you think its warranted and stop with the personalized taxi service everywhere. But P.E. classes several times per day? Not feasible.

Jun 16, 2019 11:58 AMI'm more concerned about kids /young adults that are permanently attached to their phones/computers and gaming... I don't think any of them could do without the above for more than a 48 hour period...

Jun 16, 2019 11:34 AM1. Child makes a decision
2. Parents make a decision
3. Big tobacco makes a decision
4. Legislators make a decision
5. Voters make decisions
6 Some people decide to blame only one element our of the complex decision tree. Why is that?

Jun 16, 2019 11:11 AMWe can all thank big tobacco for this trend. As most adults are well aware that smoking will eventually KILL YOU, all tobacco companies do now is target the 10 - 20-year-old kiddies with the kid flavored vape juice. These companies still have a mighty stronghold on the Pacific Rim countries along with eastern Europe, but the word has finally gotten out regarding the huge merchants of death.

Jun 18, 2019 08:43 AMexcept vape "juice" companies have absolutely NOTHING to do with big tobacco. You do realize they are two different parts of an industry. That doesnt mean they are the same thing. let alone you can have vape "juice" with no nicotine. is that like a beer with no alcohol, or a cigg with no nicotine? a bidi? its still lumped into the same category. and chastised the same way.

Jun 16, 2019 11:21 PM@A156- Let's not forget how much tar and byproducts are in POT smoking too... and you all gave it a "Green Light" with your votes... BIG Tobacco had NOTHING to do with that!
