A vague social media post from an anonymous account prompted school administrators to request an investigation into the source and intent of the post. On Thursday, October 28, 2021, School Resource Deputy (SRD) Hedricks was contacted by the Santa Barbara Unified School District regarding a post on an Instagram story that was causing concern. The post was from a newly created account with very few posts and did not include a real name. The story post was text only and read “Don’t go to school tomorrow”.

This post generated concern amongst parents, students and staff who interpreted the meaning of the post to be a threat. SRD Hedricks was shown a screenshot of the post and in collaboration with school administrators, began speaking with students to track down the account creator. In under an hour, SRD Hedricks was able to determine that the post was not a threat and there was no need to halt school activities.

The creator of the account was found to be a juvenile in Ventura County. SRD Hedricks worked with the school that the juvenile attends to ensure that the juvenile understood the great concern that the post had caused. This incident was document by SRD Hedricks as an incident report only and there will be no request for juvenile court intervention.

  1. wow…from a simple, “don’t go to school” post? so now we have to watch every word we say so someone doesn’t think it’s a threat?
don’t go to work tomorrow. don’t go to the gas station tomorrow. don’t go to the gym tomorrow. don’t go to school tomorrow.
sorry, but i don’t see any wrong in the words and if we are that soft now…..well then we have far bigger concerns.

  2. “Don’t go to school” – could be a (1) veiled threat, or it could be a (2) call for a school boycott, which is also in the news. Or with general disappointment in our #45 ranked schools, this might even be (3) common sense good advice. And finally, (4) a silly prank. Shows how words often don’t mean just only one thing, in this time of alleged trigger words causing instant meltdowns. Slow down and do investigate concerns remains the best advice, as happened here. Demonstrating it is also wise to consider of the range of options these relatively neutral words could also mean.

  4. Treading on a first amendment right? First of all, let’s start with his post was on a PRIVATE platform – where you aren’t guaranteed to post ANYTHING – and the government is not limiting someone’s ability to post. The kid didn’t get in trouble – and the SRO only checked in with the source of the post. Please tell us great culture warrior how someone’s 1st Amendment right was being trampled on?
