A sheriff’s deputy is recovering at home after testing positive for COVID-19. The deputy is assigned to patrol at the Santa Maria Station and last worked on Saturday, March 28, 2020. The next day the deputy began experiencing COVID-19-like symptoms. The deputy was tested on Monday, March 30, 2020. The deputy was on regular days off while awaiting test results. On Tuesday, March 31, 2020, the test returned as positive for COVID-19.
After consulting with the Public Health Department, no one else was isolated as a result of this new case.
This is the sixth Sheriff’s Office employee to test positive for COVID-19.

A Custody Deputy is recovering at home after testing positive for COVID-19. The Custody Deputy is assigned to the Main Jail and last worked on Thursday, March 26, 2020. The following day, a member of the Custody Deputy’s family tested positive for COVID-19, which prompted the remainder of the family to be tested. The Custody Deputy was on regular days off while they awaited test results. On Sunday, March 29, 2020, the Custody Deputy’s test returned as positive for COVID-19.
In a separate and unrelated incident, another Sheriff’s Deputy has tested positive for COVID-19 and is recovering at home. The Deputy last worked patrol on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. The Deputy began experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms on Thursday, March 19, 2020 and has not returned to work since. The Deputy was tested on Thursday, March 26, 2020 and received the positive test results today, March 30, 2020.
After consulting with the Public Health Department, no additional staff nor any inmates have been isolated as a result of these new cases.
Two Sheriff’s Deputies Test Positive for Coronavirus
Two Sheriff’s Deputies are recovering at home after testing positive for COVID-19. The first deputy was assigned to patrol in the Santa Maria area and last worked patrol on Saturday, March 21, 2020.
The deputy began feeling ill the following day, Sunday, March 22, 2020 and was experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms. The deputy was tested on Monday, March 23, 2020 and began self-isolation. The deputy was notified that the test results were positive for COVID-19 on Friday, March 27, 2020 by Public Health.
A fellow deputy who had ridden in a patrol car with the first deputy began experiencing COVID-19 related symptoms while at work on Friday, March 27, 2020. The deputy left work, sought medical attention- including testing, and went home to isolate. On Saturday, March 28, 2020 the second deputy was notified that the test results were positive for COVID-19.
The Sheriff’s Office has been working closely with Public Health to evaluate any potential risk to additional staff or the public. The Sheriff’s Office initiated additional follow-up that included tracing back each of the deputies’ contacts with the public and coworkers in a pro-active effort to identify possible exposures. No additional people have been identified or recommended for self-isolation protocol by Public Health.
The Sheriff’s Office remains steadfast in our commitment to providing the highest quality of law enforcement service during this trying time. While the challenges of controlling the spread of COVID-19 present another layer of safety concerns for deputies, we are dedicated to safely and effectively keeping the peace.
We need our sheriffs deputies to be healthy. How many law enforcement personnel have now been exposed because it took 5 days for a test to come back? We need our PH department to be more proactive.
