Sexual Assault Suspect Arrested – SMPD Seeking Further Information

On Thursday, January 18, 2024, the Santa Maria Police Department Detective Bureau served search and arrest warrants in the 200 block of W. Williams Street related to an ongoing sexual assault investigation. As a result, 54-year-old Santa Maria resident Jose Del Refugio Madrigal Leon was arrested on felony sexual assault related charges. Madrigal Leon was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail.

Two adult victims were identified in connection to this case that spans over the course of several years. Detectives believe there may be additional sexual assault victims associated to this investigation that have not reported to law enforcement.
