Sometimes old memories pop up in my head of things that have happened in my life, things I have witnessed and remember and wondered about time and time again. Soon after my father passed away one of my sisters, who was about 7 months pregnant, was over at our house babysitting my little sister. I was not dependable enough to do so as I was 12, almost 13, not a babysitter though this late afternoon I was in my bedroom doing my homework the year was 1971. My sister who was pregnant was 18, my little sister was 4, I do not remember the exact date though my Dad passed away April the 21st and my birthday was May the 24th, it was somewhere in between. I was sitting at my desk trying to figure out some Math problems when I heard some banging around, voices being raised there was a mans voice too loud for the TV, I came out of my room and there was my Sister’s husband John yelling, he had his hands around my Sister’s throat and he was choking the shit outta her.

My little sister was holding onto his leg yelling, he turned, let go of my pregnant Sister, grabbed little Kelly and threw her against a wall, she was knocked out cold. I can’t remember what I yelled at him something. He came after me, I ran in my room hoping to give my Sister time to escape and call the police. I picked up a piece of wood and threw it at him it hit a wall mirror shattering it. Glass went all over the place cutting the crap out of both of us, he got up and ran out the front door standing on the front porch yelling something about killing his wife I tackled him, over the railing he went breaking his arm he jumped up and took off running. My Sisters though banged up were OK, I did not see John after that for a couple months, I heard he was dealing drugs and ripped off the supplier pretty much figured that sooner than later he’d be found dead somewhere that is what happens to people that do stupid things like rip off the dope supplier.

Sometime during the Summer my pregnant sister called me and told me she had no food in her house and asked me to bring something over. I had never been to their apartment it was somewhere on the North End of town, quite a ways away I got my allowance got on my bicycle and headed out there it took awhile it was a real hot day with my allowance two Dollars I was able to get a dozen eggs, loaf of bread, 2 cans of refried beans, pack of smokes, and a couple pops and still had some change left over. My sister was really sad, the apartment was in a really rough area it was very hot outside I gave her everything except for a pop and a few cigarettes she got most of the pack. While there 2 guys came to the door asking about John I told them he told me he was going to Denver they said “Thanks Kid” and left my sister was angry at me for snitching out her husband, but he was actually in Hammond I had seen him, I lied to the collectors. These collectors are different from the ones who collect on a bill these collectors take your money and a limb too, or break a couple bones or if you really piss them off and don’t have what you owe them they might waste you. John disappeared again after that my Sister got divorced had the kid, a daughter, his family adopted her kid. We all got our own lives after that Sister dated other men her, Husband and kid were out of her life…All of us were partying running around having a good time in our Young lives just when mine started to look up I was struck down by encephalitis-meningitis wiped my brain clean pretty much I wasn’t all there to began with this disease took the rest.

When I got out of the hospital I weighed 115 pounds, 6’5, 115 pounds is alittle thin. My Folks told me that my Sister Denise was in a hospital in Chicago with some weird stomach thing she had almost died also. She weighed 85 pounds, After she got out of the hospital were were both put in programs I was placed in an adult half way house, she got a Transitional living apartment in the same program in Fort Wayne Indiana. I had been in the same programs Boys Home but after leaving the hospital went into the adult home. I could not function normally anymore so I just partied got drunk, got in trouble though I was considered an adult I was at risk so whenever I took off the police were always on the lookout for me. After a while I got into a Transitional living apartment too but I got into major trouble and was basically tossed out of the program and Fort Wayne, Indiana. I went back up to my hometown Hammond, Indiana got an apartment did odd jobs as I was an odd young man still couldn’t think straight nor keep a job longer than a month or two worked and got drunk HELL sometimes I got drunk first. In the Summer of 1978 the Hammond Police fished a body out of the Little Calumet River it was my former Brother in Law John, as Expected he was shot full of dope and tossed in the River it was a Homicide, Cops and the Bad Guys always get their man. All these years I always thought John was murdered just for stealing that dope but it turns out it wasn’t the only reason…John cleaned himself up got off the dope got himself a nice girlfriend a good job and instead of paying back what he took from the drug dealer he became a police informant. Here all these years I thought he got killed for stealing that dope Here the Dumb Ass added insult to injury by becoming a snitch too. That was how he was going to pay back someone he ripped off sometimes I still Shake my Head thinking about that.
