Scanner Reports 1-6-20
By Roger the Scanner Guy
When I lived with the Doctor on Chiquita Road I worked the night shift most of the time so I let a friend crash in my studio which was under the front of the house. I had known Jonathan a few years having met him in New House he just couldn't stay sober, he got stabbed over on Cacique street and no one would take him in to get well so I did besides that he was a good cook and I love to eat. I'd get off work in the Morning get me some coffee and go home. First thing I'd do when I got home is go up to the swimming pool because sometimes these lizards would fall in the pool and they could not get out on their own. I'd find something and scoop them out. When I was younger I hunted when I needed to eat and I fished too but as I got older I couldn't kill animals, course I eat meat I buy in the store so I'm a hypocrite, but I cannot handle watching one suffer maybe the way I grew up had something to do with it, I don't know.
Some days I couldn't just scoop the lizards out of the pool I had to go in and get them, the first time I jumped in to save a lizard it was Wintertime and the pool was unheated. I just changed into a swimsuit and dove, I think I woke up everyone in the neighborhood when I came out of that water Damn that shit was cold! I got the lizards out and went into my warm apartment Jonathan said I was lucky I wasn't dead from the shock from jumping in that cold water. I tried not doing it as much after that but when I could not reach a lizard I did it anyway when it got to be warm outside I was grateful.
One morning I came home from work and a lizard was under the grate next to the drain, The point of no return. I got my swim trunks on went out and dove in not thinking twice I swam down and stuck my hand through the grate and got ahold of the little booger but I could not get my hand back through the grate. It easily went through but I could not get my hand out, I tried and tried I thought This is it. I did not think about that long before I swam into position putting both feet on the bottom of the pool and pushing myself up as hard as I could that hurt like hell but I got out of it minus some skin and the lizard I could not save one that day. I drove over to Saint Francis and got my hand wrapped, back then I had a car as soon as I got healed up I continued saving lizards and other little boogers that fell in the pool but I never stuck my hand through the grate again..I miss those days when I was young and strong and had a car and I could contribute to the good now I'm a broken down old fart.
The other morning I was wheezing real hard in my little house and had to call 911, as soon as I got outside the wheezing went away and one of the firefighters that showed up gave me a rash of shit for wasting their time accused me of faking so I could get a ride to the hospital. He pissed me off real good but not enough to say anything back to him so he could call the police on me and have me labeled combative. He made me feel like a total pos when I got to Cottage a REAL Nurse and a REAL Doctor checked me out they discovered I was WHEEZING and short of breath. I have ASTHMA had it all my life. I had to have 2 breathing treatments to get my breathing normal again and now I have an inhaler also prescribed to me by a REAL DOCTOR, not by Mr. January the Firefighter. I have insurance which I paid into for a long time while I was WORKING which will pay for my treatment and ride to the Hospital. A warning to others affected by MOLD it's all over the place protect yourself so Mr. January won't give you a rash of shit...HERE are YOUR SCANNER REPORTS.

Jan 06, 2020 11:52 AMDear Roger: Santa Barbara firemen can be quite nice and helpful. It’s not always the case. I once had a small group of firemen act quite rudely toward me, with no reason to do so. I’m sorry that your experience was bad. People really cannot relate to asthma, I find. 40 years ago, I was taken to Cottage ER because of an asthma attack. To this day, and thank goodness, I’ve never had such a terrible, scary attack as the one I had back then. While at the ER, as I was lying on the hospital bed, struggling mightily for each breath, my one hand kind of clawing at my chest. The doctor came in, looked down at me, and asked me something like “How are you doing?” My heart was pounding out of my chest, the asthma felt like a rope tightening around my neck and like my lungs were being crushed by an enormous weight. I could barely gasp out, “I feel . . . like. . . I’m . . . dying. . .” The doctor just stood there, looking at me. After what seemed like an eternity, he sneered at me, “Well. You’re not, are you?”

Jan 06, 2020 12:17 PMI know for the most part Firefighters are wonderful people I have known many and I have described them as angels on earth before I had my life saved twice by Firefighters once in Goleta many years ago Asthma Attack by Station 17, and Hammond my home town when I was a kid. However this guy was very mean. Some people should just do their jobs and not treat others like crap. Thank You for your comment.

Jan 06, 2020 01:09 PMHi Roger,
When I started reading your story about Jonathan being a good cook and then you went right into getting the lizards out of the pool, well, I started thinking the lizards were for him to cook.
Years ago when I worked in a grocery store the fire crews would come in almost daily for the food for their shift. I became friendly with several of them over the years and would offer the following: "I went to the fire academy, and did well on almost everything, but I just could not pass the grocery shopping class."
Hang in there, and keep the stories coming!

Jan 06, 2020 02:42 PMHey Roger, sorry to hear about the firefighter call...That is a rare instance and there may have been more to the story from his perspective...Maybe they were on back to back calls and had a bad one prior to arriving at your place, that area of SB has a very high call load and I'm sure they (FD) see a lot of the same people over and over again... Anyway, no excuses for Mr January, he should have apologized for being short to you... it happens, everyone is human.

Jan 06, 2020 11:30 PMThere's no excuse for people being nasty, especially when part of their job description is to serve and protect the public.

Jan 07, 2020 04:26 PMRoger, I think the fireman was incredibly nasty and rude. He should have been reported to his Captain and maybe get some sensitivity training. We've had firefighters in our family (all retired now) and they would never have acted like that guy.

Jan 07, 2020 04:56 PMI never identify Folks I write about, I don't want to give him a black mark for his nasty remarks with me just writing it here helps me let it out. I bet he talk to others like this others who resemble me long hair Ragamuffin types I hope in the future he will keep his thoughts to himself. I used to have a real close friend who was a cop and he told me that when you complain about a responder officially it goes in their permanent record. I don't want to do that to him he is probably a good guy to others..I just assume letting it go after a few more days walking down the street talking to myself and answering myself I'll be as good as nude, I mean new...Thanks for the comment...
