  1. Wow, can’t believe it’s come to this. Where the library is no longer for reading books, but a drug center. And people think it’s ok. Big mistake, making this legal, yes kids bought weed before and will do it again, that’s not the point, so get off your righteous liberal horse people. When your kids are sitting at home high, or driving high and not going to school or work, or end up in jail or become the local drug dealer tell me then how proud you are.

  2. Crystal – who “thinks it’s ok” that the library is a “drug center?” Also, making weed legal has NOTHING to do with kids illegally buying weed from street dealers. They’ve been doing that for generations. Try not to get too hysterical about it, OK?

  3. Libraries are pretty obsolete. Paper books make about as much sense LP records or 8 track tapes. Entire book collection should be digitized and footprint of the library could be reduced 90% down to some public meeting rooms and some public use terminals to access the collection. We could save money and improve access to the information. Multiple that times a 100,000 libraries and you could save some serious money.

  4. Visit the SB library today. It is pretty much gutted, hollow, empty and sad except for some heavily impacted computer access station. The thrill of discovery of what you did not even know you were looking for either in the stacks or the old card catalogs was one of the greatest joys of the old libraries. Glad I had the experience – it opened up the journey of learning starting at a very young age, kindly guided by the wise librarian who knew how to hook people on books.

  5. News Flash;
    In 2018, the Santa Barbara Dwntwn public Library..IS as Roger put it,
    “A flop-house”.
    The tenants (avg # apx 50-100 depending on weather) are typically people from local over-night programs ie; Salvation Army, Path etc, as well as the regular homeless population.
    Immediately upon opening it’s doors, all of the available computers are reserved by above persons..who watch You-Tube videos.
    All of the over-stuffed lounge seats are occupied for the day, as well as their electrical outlets..as the person sleeps, uninterrupted by library staff.
    The mens room then becomes the locker/laundry room..unchecked by library staff.
    Concerns have been voiced to library staff on many occasions, without action.
    Source: standing in the middle of the library at this time.
