May the 4th Be With You on Star Wars Day

You’ve heard it all day. “May the Fourth be with you.” Star Wars fans and general nerds are geeking out for today’s unofficial turned semi-official space holiday to celebrate a galaxy far far away. What started as a clever pun has now turned into a full-fledged grassroots marketing campaign for all things Jedi related.

While the idea of May the 4th started with fans and not Lucasfilm, the film company that created Star Wars has fully embraced the spirit of fandom that makes the day so special, reports StarWars.com. Associated retailers and partners are now offering sales, giveaways, exclusives, and even hosted parties to honor the day.

For those who aren’t die-hard SW fans, you might have noticed an influx of space references, Princess Leia hairstyles, and t-shirts depicting black and white space suits. Roll with it, it’s their day.

And for those intense fans, we highly recommend reading this article on LiveScience that breaks down the most amazing and adorable animal creations from The Last Jedi. From floppy-eared fathiers to crystal foxes and pudgy porgs, they’re all cute in their own way serving a specific purpose for their make-believe habitats.

This Memorial Day, May 25, Lucasfilm will premiere its first film over the holiday weekend since 2005, Solo: A Star Wars Story. They may eventually move all of their film premieres to the start of the summer starting in 2020. Many speculate this change was brought by Disney to capitalize on today’s “holiday” with added marketing benefits.

Whether you’re a fan of Star Wars or just love someone who is, today is a day for all nerds to unite and join the rebel cause or lightside or darkside or whatever new term George Lucas has created for good, bad, and in the middle.

In conclusion, May the 4th be with you.

  1. This phrase was mildly amusing the first time it was used, but now it’s just wearisome. Maybe it’s time to relegate the sad wordplay back to the elementary school from whence it obviously came.
