Fans were lining up for one of their last meals at Dutch Garden on Thursday.
I hope they all made reservations.
Maybe one of them will buy the restaurant for a good price and continue with the same staff/menu/recipes. Long live Dutch Garden. Sounds like this was a 'hidden' gem. I went there once with my adult son. I think I was the only woman in there. That menu was a magnet with men with hearty appetites and a thirst for a good beer. Lots of single guys who obviously were regulars and who were so comfortable going in for a big lunch. Everyone loved their tiny bar, their outdoor patio, the wait staff, etc. Sad I write this in past tense.
I am so sad about the closure! I think that restaurants should WARN us so that we have the chance to go line up like this and support them BEFORE it's too late. Maybe others will see this and do that, give us a chance to know that they need help.
The owner is closing to retire and enjoy life, it's not closing due to COVID. Make him an offer to buy the place if it isn't sold already.
Back in the good old days I remember delivering boxes of patties from my folks shop (Ye Olde) up to Dutch Garden on the way out for our lunch break. My parents have always said great things about the owners there. It's really hard to run your own business like they all did for so long, and it's too bad we don't have more great independent businesses like theirs anymore. My folks passed on their heart and soul enterprise a long while back, to hopefully continue the tradition of the shop, but the new younger owners simply couldn't hack it. If you live around here, you know what it is now. It really would be cool to see someone step up and keep the Garden going. My advice: just don't underestimate what it takes to do what the previous generation has done. They worked damn hard.
Great to see a ton of people lining up for one last shot at the Garden. What a cool spot. Enjoy your retirement you guys!
I sure do miss your parents Butcher Shop. The meatloaf sammie was the bomb! Always generous with portions as well.
I have never tried in in my 42 years
I'll miss the Dutch Garden, and sad they closed early. I'm glad we've done pickup from them in the last months.
I really miss Ye Olde Butcher shop!! Excellent meat and sandwiches. There is not a shop like that anymore. Gelson's meat dept. the closest. Paul and Joanie the best people!!!
I was 4 years old when my family would frequent this amazing place... the restaurant is warn out, and health dept. requirements would result in the entire facility be renovated, And new owners wouldn’t guarantee old world charm, which is primary attraction, etc... Enjoy it while it last, to say the least!!!
Apparently this place has lots of fans. We used to eat there back in the 60s. Sometime in the late 1990s I went there with a friend, really looking forward to it. Instead, I got, hands down, one of the worst meals ever served to me. All I remember was it was inedible, crappy food. Never went back.
