Isla Vista Art

By Robert Bernstein

Santa Barbara tightly restricts public art. Isla Vista may be a bit chaotic at times, but it allows for a wealth of public art!

Here are my photos in recent months of this Isla Vista public art. Many of the pieces are on apartment buildings along Del Playa Drive and on other nearby streets. Some of the art is on commercial buildings in the downtown loop. I have included a mix of other art and scenes that fit the theme!

Del Playa Drive is host to perhaps the largest number of art pieces. Many are little cameo pieces on apartments apparently provided by the management to create a beach town and festive feel to invite young renters:

But the residents clearly have added their own touches:

Some clearly required permission:

Some are little details that easily could be missed:

Some of the work is signed and seemed to be a community effort:

The downtown loop has some large pieces that remain, though some have been lost since I came here in the early 80s. Sometime I will try to go through my old film archives and see if I can find some of those lost pieces. Here are some that remain:

And there are homes and buildings that are a work of art in themselves!

The summer is quiet in Isla Vista. Come on out and bike or stroll around on your own!
