Increased Air-traffic?
By an edhat reader
Has anyone noticed there seems to be more air traffic [on Friday]? We have seen numerous helicopters and private jets as well as military planes. If anyone knows anything, I would love to hear it. Thanks Edhat

Aug 09, 2021 03:00 PMHere’s a noise monitoring tip: Everybody time interval of the noise of the planes and helicopters. It’s about 10 to 15 seconds each.

Aug 09, 2021 02:17 PMAnother factor in airport noise recently increasing on the East side of the airport is weather. When there is fog or low clouds at the airport, the larger (noisier) have to land and take off toward the East. That means less noise from planes descending West of the airport and much louder full power takeoffs to the East before they have turned offshore.

Aug 08, 2021 09:52 AMSouthwest is new to the area and so are their pilots. The noise complaints will die down soon as they get more comfortable with the noise sensitive areas east of the airport, which have been no doubt shared with them all. The More Mesa noise abatement path is a little close to the main runway for non local pilots, but after a few approaches they will get the hang of it and I suspect the complaints will slow.

Aug 08, 2021 08:52 AMSouthwest is the worst of the lot. They obviously don't follow the rules. The noise has gotten a lot worse in the past few months. Where do we complain.

Aug 07, 2021 10:31 PMThis is nothing. Try living near a real airport. I just wish they'd put in a new restaurant where Elephant Bar was. Always fun taking home a stewardess after garlic fries and margaritas.

Aug 08, 2021 06:34 PM6:31 - Yes, it would be much better to just have them crash randomly.

Aug 08, 2021 06:31 PMThese big US Navy helicopters are regular Friday visitors to the SB Airport. It was said in the past that they liked having lunch at the Elephant Bar but that is now closed. I am told by a person who seems to know these things, that the pilots have to land their craft at different airports to remain certified so they come to SB to do this. In my opinion this is a pretty unpleasant behavior but probably out of the control of local forces.

Aug 08, 2021 12:44 PMSo true, Lawn! I still cannot get over all the NIMBYs in this town even though I've been here most of my life. The neighbors who complain when you park near their house on a public street! EYE ROLL. Get over it! Rich old white people are the worst kind.

Aug 07, 2021 03:22 PMPlanes arriving at SBA are supposed to come in over the ocean, then bank left over More Mesa for a straight shot into the airport. Some do, but every day, several airliners don't. They come up the coast with perfect visibility, and fly directly over the Mesa and Hope Ranch neighborhoods on a straight approach for the runway. On the SBA website, you can register to file a noise complaint. However, it sounds like noise complaints filed with SBA Administration also go straight .....into their email trash can. It's time to forward noise complaints to the Santa Barbara City Council and our state legislators. We're not moving...but the airplanes sure can.

Aug 07, 2021 03:20 PMI like the sound of tourist tax dollars arriving at SBA, morning, noon and night. I get a little jolt of endorphins from each flight. Cha-Ching.

Aug 07, 2021 02:18 PMWe live right in the flight path and the situation has definitely become worse. Planes on approach to SBA are supposed to come in over the ocean, then bank left over More Mesa for a straight shot into the airport. But both commercial and private planes totally ignore that "rule" and come right over several neighborhoods. There was a commercial flight (FedEx?) that came in this morning low and loud at 4:30 am. Sheesh! Tons of complaints have been filed but the airport authority does nothing. Typical Santa Barbara govt agency, exercising no leadership and refusing to do its job.

Aug 07, 2021 04:52 PMThe noise abatement procedure isn't a rule but rather a recommendation based on wind/weather conditions, etc. .... https://www.flysba.santabarbaraca.gov/home/showpublisheddocument/64/636842736903570000

Aug 07, 2021 03:21 PMYes. I heard and saw some private jet roaring super loud, flying low last week, over Turnpike/Goleta Bike Path ------ at around 6:00 a.m. It's terrible in that area. It's a shame Airport Authority doesn't take measures to stop such nonsense/disrespect. Not everyone needs to get up with the chickens.

Aug 07, 2021 01:15 PMAccording to the postings the last several days in the New York Post, there are a whole lot of celebs in town right now, including Chip & Joanna Gaines, Nicole Richie, Bieber and wife, the list went on and on. Not sure how many flew in on their private jets?

Aug 07, 2021 11:05 AMOf course, we sometimes get large group and corporate events in town, as you may be inquiring about. I have a few additional thoughts. I believe armed forces reserve exercises are often on weekends, and pilots often fly over SB or stop at SBA going to and from. Private aviation flights are more often on weekends. Commercial airline flights may be more often on weekends, especially during holiday seasons including Summer during school recess. Vintage, military and experimental aircraft often fly to and from airshows on weekends, especially in Summer. During fire season more aircraft associated with firefighting are active.
