Santa Barbara County Public Health officials are reporting a "dramatic increase" in COVID-19 cases due to unvaccinated residents.

During a press conference on Tuesday, officials stated the county's case rate increased by 400% in one month.

Public Health Officer Dr. Henning Ansorg expressed frustration against those who choose not to get one of the COVID-19 vaccines when it's now easily accessible.

"I am saddened to report that Santa Barbara County is experiencing a dramatic increase in new COVID cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. I am particularly saddened and upset because all of this is 100% preventable," said Dr. Ansorg.

Public Health Director Dr. Van Do-Reynoso confirmed local numbers are increasing in a "very rapid manner in the span of two weeks."

Santa Barbara County active COVID-19 cases increased by 70% to 303 from a two-week average of 179. Additionally, hospitalizations increased by 71% and the testing positivity rate reached 5.3%.

Dr. Do-Reynoso also confirmed eight COVID-19 outbreaks across the county. One location is a homeless shelter in Santa Maria and the other is a school in the South County with 23 positive cases, mostly students.

If the state was still using the color-coded tier system, Santa Barbara County would be at the brink of the purple tier, she said.

Nearly 52% of the county's entire population is fully vaccinated and 61% of those that are eligible. Approximately 149,600 county residents are unvaccinated.

Dr. Ansorg confirmed 80% of new positive cases and all hospitalizations were unvaccinated people. Approximately 20% of new COVID-19 cases were among vaccinated people although none required hospitalization most had zero to minimal symptoms.

While addressing "breakthrough" infections, Dr. Ansorg stated, "what we are seeing so far is that asymptomatic, vaccinated people do not seem to spread the virus."

Dr. Do-Reynoso stated the Public Health Department will consider reinstating the mask mandate if the numbers continue to consistently increase, but for now, they're content issuing advisories and encouraging vaccination.

On Tuesday morning, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a change to its masking recommendations as it grows more concerned over the Delta variant of Covid-19, urging vaccinated people in certain areas of the country to resume wearing masks indoors in public areas.

People living in areas with "high" or "substantial" Covid-19 transmission should resume wearing masks indoors, said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. This is nearly two-thirds of counties in the United States.

For those who are unvaccinated, the guidance remains the same, continue to wear a mask until receiving the vaccine.

The CDC's latest guidance also recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to schools, regardless of vaccination status.

Thank you(r) for making clear to everyone how much weight that should place on your comments. 1) the Half-moon bay review is merely the local periodical this doctor published is opinion 2) that "twit" is highly experienced and credentialed doctor, here is his linkedin , what credentials do you have to label this guys a "twit" and his opinion "FUD"? and your opinon is not FUD?
3) there is no data in the article, save for the number of pediatric flu deaths the past 3 years, it is an opinion for discussion as I mentioned in my comment.

The 14 least least-vaccinated districts are all Republican and rural (or have a rural population of at least 40%). Missouri, which has one of the lowest vaccination rates of any state, took the bottom four spots.

Yet as of two days ago, Missouri is tied with CA in death rate per capita. Weird.
Your peer review studies do not say Republicans are dying at higher rates than Democrats.
They say that blue states started of with high death rates and then red staes surpassed them.
Sounds like the same thing but when you go to the actual death rates per 100,000 from day one until July 27 2021 in the link you will see that the top 5 death rate leaders are 1-4 blue NJ, NY, MASS, RI, and then at #5 the decades long worst state in America for health: red Mississippi.

Florida with its large retiree base is 10% higher than CA but never shut down.
CA is tied with MO
There are 18 states with better numbers per capita than CA 10 are blue and 8 are red

COVID-19 In Illinois: 10 Deaths, 51 Hospitalizations In Breakthrough Cases In Past Week

CSF throughout this pandemic, I questioned the "cause" of deaths as Covid myself, consistently and I still do so now with the vaccines so nothing has changed for me but I do agree, that many who insisted "it wasn't due to Covid" are now saying it is, period, and being total hypocrites as usual, as we've seen over and over again during this entire pandemic. Same with those who dont' trust the government to tell them to get a vaccine b/c it's not approved by the FDA, a gov't entity. Same hypocrisy, different side of the coin.

I think people still don't care CSF, I have been questioning this from the beginning and strenuously when I heard Ventura County had a covid death... that was actually drug OD but still put up as a covid death. Accurately conveying stats like that, as well as those in the hospital for something else that happened to test positive for coivd, defeats the fear mongering narrative that keeps politicians chokehold on power over so many oblivious citizens. With everything we've been through this past year it absolutely blows my mind so many here think we should give more power to the government!

VOR: It's interesting that, only now, people care about the exact cause of deaths in COVID breakthrough cases. Before the vaccines, a death plus a positive COVID test meant you died of COVID. If you look at the wording on the CDPH website, it's clear they're going to play they intend to scrutinize each and every post-vaccine death in order to juke the stats.

"However, it is unknown if the primary cause of death in these cases was COVID-19 or if there were other contributory or alternate causes." ---CDPH

Nor their age or underlying symptoms. This is very misleading because with the "breakthrough" cases in the hospital, the patients came to into the hospital for something else then tested positive for covid (an article in the LA times I think recently). So how many of those 10 deaths and 51 hospitalizations were due to covid vs. the patient came in for something else and tested positive for covid? At this point in the pandemic these aren't even questions we shouldn't even have to ask but should be told or not even treated as a covid death/hospitalization.

This Dr. brings up a very good point. We're 18 months in. What may have been okay early on out of an abundance of caution, without much supporting data is one thing. Now, guidance and policy should be backed by robust randomized controlled trials. If we don't have that information who failed us? CDC, NIH, WHO, big pharma, medical universities, AAP?

There are several congress persons that have maintained that they have recovered immunity, won't be vaccinating, and do not think they need to mask. I think that absent some allergy or other valid reason not to vaccinate, they should, just to be on the safe side, but it is at least an informed decision on their part not to vaccinate.

Here is an article on "Uberantibodies from Recovered Covid 19 Patients"

GT: Have you looked at the vaccinations by demographic on the CDPH website? The majority of those eligible for the vaccine, but have declined, are not the demographic you'd expect based on your comment. Furthermore, have you seen or listened to the PSAs, or recall that whole Olivia Rodrigo/White House stunt? I'm not getting the conservative vibe from any of those vaccine promotions---very much the opposite.

All but one of the 39 congressional districts where at least 60 percent of residents have received a coronavirus shot are represented by Democrats, according to a Harvard University analysis that presents one of the most detailed looks yet at the partisan split behind the nation’s diverging vaccination drive. By contrast, Republicans represent all but two of the 30 districts where fewer than one-third of residents have received a shot.

Polling is a form of anecdotal data.
Double check it using LA County total vaccination verrified and confirmed data.
For example in LA County 75% are Democrats (75 per 100) which at a 90% vaccination rate gives 67 per 100 vaccinated or 67%. That 67% exceeds the 62% total reported by LA County so that 90% figure cannot be right.

Lets use your 80% Democrat vax % which gives a 60 per 100 rate and a 50% of the 25 per 100 Republican which adds 12.5 per 100 or 12.5%. Net 72.5% Nope, still too high. Exceeds 62%
The only way your Democrats at 80% number works in LA County is if less than 10% of Republicans are getting vaxxed.

So lets compare known rates rather than self reported poll information.
Blacks and Hispanics are vaccinated in LA County as of July 15th at rates in the 45% range for blacks, 54% for Hispanics (look it up on the LA County dashboard ) and they overwhelmingly vote Democrat. Whites are vaccinated in the 66% range.

The verified data as differentiated from self reported data shows clearly that in LA County (and in most large urban coress across the US) shows that vax resistance for a variety of reasons is a problem in the Black and Hispanic urban core. Asians and Pacific Islanders are vaxxing at much higher rates. Blacks and Hispanics are at higher rates of co-morbidities, and good luck to Biden in convincingeither population to vax. I do know if Biden tries to coerce the Black and Hispanic urban vax resistant, it will not go well. They probably will abstain from voting at the very least.

To sum it up, in coastal CA, the problem isn't "those 27 per 100 Trump voters" (as per 2020 LA County election stats) its the 73 per 100 Biden voters who are over reporting their vax status on polls and under reporting to the vax locations for actual shots.
(If 90% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans were factual in LA County, we'd already be at 80% vaccinated)

Black population is lowest percentage vaccinated and they aren’t republicans by and large. They do seem to be catching up lately due to delta but the post is political scapegoating isn’t helpful.

I just found out yesterday that my idiot brother and his also idiot wife aren't vaccinated because "we're pretty sure we had it early on in the pandemic", like March 2020. They've had no test to prove this, naturally, and my brother's best friend died from COVID at age 47. You can't fix stupid, but you'd better believe the next time we visit home - he's not coming inside the house unless he's been vaccinated.

since every post is about how they are "gona let the chips fall where they may..."

you are just as idiotic as the antivaxers. you understand that if we allow this virus to mutate with more and more hosts we WILL HAVE A NEW PANDEMIC.

wear the mask, STOP THE SPREAD. so it cant mutate and GET OUTSIDE THE VACCINE!

PSTARSR it appears you are referring to my comment and if you use some reading comprehension and go back and re-read what I wrote, I said I'm letting the chips fall where they may in that I am no longer discussing vaccines with the unvaxxed or making any effort to convince them, and letting chips fall where they may means if they get sick that's on them. So relax OK, and read a little more carefully next time before you go on the attack and judge, I am fully aware of risk of more variants and have posted about that many times on here.

BASIC - I have no problem allowing those who refuse masks, refuse vaccines and put their families and neighbors at risk get what's coming, but remember there are a lot of people out there who are at risk despite being fully vaccinated. People going through chemo, even if fully vaxxed, are usually immunocompromised and at risk of not just infection, but complications. There are many other conditions putting people who want to be vaxxed at the same risk as those who choose to be unvaxxed. Heck, even kids (see Mississippi) are suffering.

I wear my mask for THEM. I wear it for those who can't be protected despite the desire to be. Let the others soak up all the 'vid they want, but let's not forget those who are unable to achieve immunity.

Because that would be a reasonable course of action and when the world doesn't end would highlight how politicians/bureaucrats utterly failed with their covid response (all the pain and cost of shutdowns but with no benefit).

Totally for vaccination, myself and all family and friends have complied, really sympathize with the medical folks and am not happy with those that endanger others without getting vaccinated. But calling our area and the rest of SOCAL "SUBSTANTIAL" spread means something very different than last year . If one checks the local SB Health Dept. Site and goes to "Case Rate per 100K People" chart the current rate is low (case rate 9, about equal to June of 20) compared to last year . Further checking on the site shows the numbers in the hospital, etc. . YES folks should get vaccinated, and those that aren't may get sick and infect others. But is this a crisis?

After reading some of these comments, and given where we are today, I'm so done even communicating about this with some people. I certainly don't wish illness or death on anyone but at this point, I think what is done is done and everyone will have to accept consequences of their decisions. Covid may not kill you but it could leave you with long term damage including brain damage which cannot be reversed. You could also infect someone that will die or be severely ill from it. Vaccine is safe and any minute risk, which every vaccine has, us far far less of a concern than the risks of Covid not just to you but to others [you're not the only one who exists]. So, what is done is done, let the chips fall where they may.

Edney, that is exactly why the lockdown/shutdown approach to covid was and is the biggest public health failure in history. There is a reason it was never attempted before, there is a reason CDC's pandemic response plans to a major pandemic didn't involve things like shutting schools and small businesses down even in the worst case scenario (which involved 4 million + fatalities in the US). People have forgotten that the goal of flattening the curve was only to prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed, that's it. It slowed things down but the area under the curve (number of people infected) remains the same. By trying to flatten the curve to zero (impossible) we've only delayed the inevitable. Had we taken a path of targeted protection, focusing on protecting and supporting those at risk of dying or having serious complications from covid, while the rest of the population went about their lives, knowing we're in a pandemic and taking responsible precautions to protect themselves, we'd be in a much better position today with a higher % of the population vaccinated or developed natural immunity from prior infection while also having fewer deaths due to having focused our efforts on protecting those truly at-risk. Everything our politicians/bureaucrats/CDC/etc. have done since then, including mask mandates, has been to cover up and distract from the absolute utter failure of shutting everything down.
