How much do Calstar helicopter rescues charge for emergencies? Is this something most health insurance covers?

A friend had a motorcycle accident in rural South Dakota two years ago and had to be airlifted about 40 miles. His bill was more than $40,000, not covered by insurance.

Interesting question, two contexts: Medical emergency that cannot be foreseen vs. completely foreseeable problems ignored by idiots on hiking trails. Who pays for the idiots?

Emergency services are there for anyone who needs them (not just the deserving few with the political clout or proper demographic affiliation). Some day that "idiot" could be you or a relative or friend of yours and when that happens you'll be grateful for the assistance and glad it's there.

We pay on the theory that we don't want to discourage people from calling for emergency services when they need them, whether it is a result of poor planning or not. If someone doesn't call and then dies because they are afraid of charges, will that make us a better society? The needless death of anyone diminishes us all. Yes it would be nice if everyone was responsible and services were only dispensed to the truly deserving. But that is not the way the world works these days.

A local AMR Ground ambulance from the Eastside to Cottage will run you about $3500 minimum... Calstar is probably a little more expensive....

I heard of a story where an Uber refused to carry an injured person and called an ambulance to take them to the ER.

A friend who lives by Sacramento, out in the boonies, pays $95 a year for ambulance insurance. She was in an accident on a remote country road and the bill for the ambulance would have been $4,000 but cost her nothing.

An ambulance ride should be covered under regular health insurance. Period. No one should have to pay extra for life saving services.

You can buy insurance from CalStar on a yearly plan, it doesn't cost much and covers all your family members. If your insurance doesn't cover the cost of the air ambulance the CalStar covers the entire cost. Also they are partners with several air ambulances in several states so you are covered there as well.

Definitely not "most". If you spend any significant amount of time in inaccessible locations, air ambulance insurance can be obtained for less than $150/yr in our area.

It seems like whenever they have a stabbing or shooting in Lompoc or Santa Maria they helicopter them down to Santa Barbara cottage Hospital… Who pays for that and what is that cost annually

Gizmo1 - what would you prefer they do with gunshot/knife victims from up North?

Um yeah it does get written off. I know several people who work for medical providers. Unless they know they can collect it - it gets written off as uncollected debt Same w/ when they treat the homeless and such. Anyone with a brain does not spend money trying to collect an uncollectible debt.

The main reason they bring those patients in to SBCH is because our hospital is the only Level 1 Trauma center between LA and San Jose. Thus the need for the helepad and the air ambulances.

More than likely it goes to a bill collector. No, they don't "eat it" or claim it as tax write off.

EIther Medicare, MediCal, their own private insurance or if any of those don't apply, Calstar eats it. And deducts it on corporate taxes. Just like any other business loss.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners an average cost for one air ambulance flight is between $12,000 and $25,000. If your carrier covers it, it will be under something like "air ambulance".

OP: Some of these commenters seem to be referring to search and rescue not medical emergency transport. It depends on your insurance carrier however, Medicare will pay for emergency ambulance transportation in a helicopter if your health condition requires immediate and rapid ambulance transportation that ground transportation can't provide. If Medicare covers it chances are, if you have decent insurance, so will your private carrier. As long as ground transport is not an option, it will be covered. I had a friend who had to be airlifted for emergency heart surgery and her insurance covered it. It is expensive.

KEYT ran a story on the bicyclist that was helicoptered down from Gibraltar and they were going after him for more than 30K in emergency bill, including transport. Once KEYT got involved and gave them bad publicity, I think they settled for much less.

Why? Are you or you and a pal thinking of going out hiking in the front country without water, food, flashlight, warm outer layer clothing, etc?

Cal-Star doesn't do SARs. That'd be the Sheriff helicopter, if it's in service.

I believe they may be referring to medical airlifts, for trauma patients (like to our new landing pad at Cottage), not search and rescue.
