Are Parks Monitored?
By an edhat reader
Does anyone know if law enforcement is monitoring public parks? This afternoon, Ortega park has been filled with people playing basketball and selling food.

Mar 31, 2020 08:26 AMContrary to the many opinions on this thread, here are some facts to answer your question.
Yes, the City Parks Department has posted many signs throughout the parks system advising patrons to adhere to CDC and County Health guidelines.
Yes, Parks are still being monitored by the handful of Park Rangers who are brave and deal with a lot of unpleasant situations so the rest of us can enjoy our city without fear.
Yes, Skater's Point is now fenced-off. The skaters weren't self-policing, so the Parks Department had to step in and enforce for the safety of the public. Which brings me to my last point.
If we could respectfully self-police each other then we wouldn't have to rely on authorities to act as arbitrators between us. We don't have to start fights when we ask our fellow citizens to disband, stop playing basketball, stop 15 person yoga groups at Shoreline Park, stop flooding specific areas (Harbor). With the kindness we expect from others we can communicate just how serious this pandemic is, and little by little most of us will see the light. 80% of us are thoughtful enough to take drastic measures. It's that 20% of the population who is prolonging our risk. I believe extreme kindness and truth is the best way to influence the 20% to join-in on the collective effort.

Mar 31, 2020 10:07 AMLOQUAT - I agree 100%, but non-contact exercise such as outdoor yoga is not a threat. I've seen groups doing this at the park near my home and they're all at least 10 feet away from each other, just doing their thing. No on is hugging or touching, just exercising outside at a respectable distance from each other. We should still be able to lawfully assemble, just not closely. I'd hate to see these people get targeted and harassed (more than they already have been).

Mar 30, 2020 04:00 PMThe city really should have signs up at all the parks and beaches that say no groups larger than 5 people allowed and social distancing of at least 6 feet.

Mar 30, 2020 03:25 PMSHMONK - I'm not asking for policing, just telling you what they've said. "Frequent violators of the shelter in place order could potentially be charged with a misdemeanor and in certain cases jailed, he stated. " ------https://www.edhat.com/news/public-health-confirms-24-coronavirus-cases-in-santa-barbara-county -------- Look, most of us understand how important it is to keep our distance now, but some just don't care. If the cops start ticketing "frequent violators," then great! BUT.... I do not think we need more policing. Just the ones who are blatantly violating the order repeatedly and without care for the rest of humanity.

Mar 30, 2020 03:18 PMPUG - it is not illegal. And I am not clamoring for people to congregate in large groups, in fact it is very irresponsible. I have been home for weeks other than work. but I am not gonna ask police to intervene MORE than they already do

Mar 30, 2020 03:17 PMNo they won't. Stop asking for more policing, stop giving up your rights if you're doing nothing wrong

Mar 30, 2020 03:09 PMSHMONK - like a state that doesn't want to risk killing thousands more Americans by allowing a virus to spread though human interaction. It technically IS illegal in that it would be a violation of a government order. No, it's not illegal to just be outside (nor should it), but congregating in large groups with people from other households IS a violation of the order to shelter in place. The Sheriff can and will, for frequent violators, cite you.

Mar 30, 2020 02:49 PMSHMONK - while not a codified "law," there is an order in place to stay away from groups of other people. So, anyone doing so would be in violation of an order and can be cited.

Mar 30, 2020 10:55 AMThis whole social distancing effort is to try to keep the number of critical cases down to below the number of ICU beds. Maybe it will be enough with all of the Darwin Award candidates vying for top honors.

Mar 30, 2020 01:04 PMSacjon, I think I had it and I self-quarantined for 14 days. I think most people that get sick are being responsible about it. It is the people that are asymptomatic and still being social that present a danger. But Dr. Atul Gawande from the New Yorker concluded from South Korean data that you had to be in close proximity to an infected person who wasn't sneezing or coughing for 30 mins or more before your risk of infection went way up.

Mar 30, 2020 11:12 AMPITMIX - I am 100% for social distancing, so don't get me wrong, but I think it would be helpful to know for sure if it's working. Were the people that are testing positive practicing social distancing and cleanliness? Would be helpful and interesting to find out!

Mar 30, 2020 10:12 AMSaturday at Ortega Park homeless all sitting together and one who has a 3-year stay away order from the park. Sunday at Ortega Park was full of people on the basketball courts & on the grass next to the basketball courts. This is irresponsible in these times of community spread of this virus. They are not only putting themselves at risk but others who use the playground equipment & the bathrooms.

Mar 30, 2020 12:47 PMLovemysb--your comments show how little "MY SB" includes the totality of the people living here. These people have no place to Shelter In Place and no ability to order meals delivered and such. They go to the park because that is their front room after sleeping in the corners. Yes, they should be doing what we all need to do but they have a lot more difficulty doing it than do most.
