Scanner Reports 2-28-18

Lately, there has been an above average amount of vehicle vs pedestrian accidents. Not all pedestrians are at fault but interesting enough whenever there is a vehicle vs pedestrian accident, and it’s the motorists fault, commenters on Edhat somehow find fault with the pedestrians, just like with the recent fatal crash in the 500 Block of State street. A couple comments seemed to be offering advice to pedestrians on crossing a street when the driver was found at fault by being distracted. In this case “Looking at a map while operating a motor vehicle.” It was like “Oh well he was distracted. Like it was no big deal though the victim died.” Keep your eyes on the road while operating a motor vehicle, Distracted drivers, texting, or on a cell phone, Drunk, or High should not drive. Take a Bus or a Taxi Cab. Don’t make someone else your victim.

I tangled with vehicles several times when I was younger. The first time I got hit by a vehicle it was a hit and run. I was crossing the street with the green light, I had the right of way, I was 9 years old and was jogging across when I got nailed. I don’t remember the impact just flying in the air with all my school books then laying on the ground. I remember seeing the driver, a female, and a passenger boy about my age. I remember the female in her 30’s looked angry, I remember the pain. I hobbled away from the scene sirens in the distance. I thought my Dad would be mad at me for getting hit he would somehow say it was my fault and beat me, he did weird things like that. I told my Mom but we never told Dad, my Father had a brain aneurysm a couple years later and passed away, that was most likely what made him act the way he did, Alcohol compounded the behavior.

Vehicle vs Pedestrian accidents seem to go in cycles like everything else almost as if media attention makes everyone aware to be more careful, after a while we forget until there are a few accidents then we become aware again, rinse repeat…Here are your Scanner Reports, Monday:

The otter day I was out front getting some air I like to do that once in a while stand out front and get a little air. I always greet people walking or riding by on their bicycles. Anyway there was a family coming up Milpas Northbound on Bicycles a Dad, teenager, and Mom, with a child cart and a rug rat in it. I said Hello to the Father he gave me a dirty look. Whatever I thought. I did not say anything to the teenager, but I said Hello to Mother and she said “Your hair has to go.” Oh excuse me I’m so sorry I spoke to thy royal hiney “Short Hair” family. I thought I was really kinda shocked. 1. In the 1960s super straight people were so weird about anyone with long hair; I thought that went out long ago. When the Beatles first came on the scene people griped about the “long haired nuts”; looking at old photos and videos it seems like a joke, their hair was very neat, well styled, and barely covered their ears and they wore suits. Keep saying “Hello”, Roger, don’t let the likes of those grumpy bike riders win by changing your attitude.

  2. Roger. One thing I have realized as of late is that oftentimes people feel a need to comment. They can’t seem to help themselves. If the comment is made as they pass you, if the window of time between what people see and what they say is a very short time, commenters will say the damnedest things. Don’t take that woman’s comment to heart. She felt the need to speak and what came out of her mouth was negative and aggressive. That type of short-term eye-to-speech connection doesn’t always make for happy, intelligent comments.
