I'm looking for a class or a person to teach me how to weave baskets? I love the art and would be delighted to be able to create them. Please advise if there are classes or someone who teaches.
The Schott center has one, I believe..
Or one may befriend a Chumash & possibly attend one of our classes.
Chumash basketry is known as the finest among Native baskets.
The Museum hosts a monthly weaving session, but it is not a class. They might consider offering a class if there is sufficient interest; contact Community Education Manager Stefanie Coleman. Meanwhile, an informal basketry class led by Susan Robles is held at the Old Mission on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
Possibly the Santa Ynez Chumash have some sort of a cultural center where they teach classes in basket weaving and/or other important cultural activities.
I saw a demonstration of Chumash basket weaving through the education division of the Natural History Museum. Contact "Kristen" in the edu office for info.
