Woman Arrested for Brandishing a Gun on Castillo Street

On August 4, 2020, at approximately 6:37 P.M., the Santa Barbara Police Department was dispatched to the 1300 Block of Castillo Street on a report of a subject with a gun. Witnesses advised that a female suspect was walking in the street with a firearm. Additionally, witnesses reported that the female was at the door of a residence banging on the door with the weapon itself.

Numerous Officers responded and saturate the area. The female subject, now identified as 45-year-old Mona Chacha Cordero, of Santa Barbara, was holding a purse. Officers ordered her to drop the item while Officers held her at gun-point.

Cordero complied and was taken into custody without incident. A loaded Ruger P-90, 45 ACP semi-automatic handgun was the top item in the purse. There was a round in the chamber and two additional rounds in the magazine. An additional loaded magazine was also located in the purse. A total of 20 rounds of ammunition were collected at the scene.

The investigation revealed that Cordero pointed the loaded handgun at a victim who ran to avoid being shot.

Cordero was booked on the following charges:

  • 245(b) PC – ADW with a semiautomatic firearm
  • 29800(a)(1) PC – Felon in possession of a firearm
  • 25400(a)(2) PC – Possession of a concealed firearm
  • 30305(a)(1) PC – Felon in possession of ammunition
  • 12022.1(a)(1) PC – Committing a felony while out on own recognizance

Judge Hill approved a Gun Emergency Protective Order and a $500,00 bail enhancement.

Woman with a gun in the1300 Block of Castillo. SBPD is responding. The suspect is a Hispanic female in her 40’s wearing floral pants and a red top. She was last seen walking South. Witnesses report she knocked on several doors in the block holding the gun. She is now walking with 2 males south on the east side of the 1200 block. Police Units are in the area.
