Way Back When: It’s Christmas Time Again in Santa Barbara!

By Betsy J. Green

In December 1918, World War I was behind us, and we started to look ahead to better days. Christmas was just around the corner. Kids had toys on their lists – that hasn’t changed. And a pair of warm cozy slippers were also a popular gift. Here’s an ad from a local store.

If you are still looking for that perfect gift, I’ll be signing my newest book “Way Back When: Santa Barbara in 1918” at the Santa Barbara Arts gift shop today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local stores were hoping that folks would shop local and not buy from a mail-order catalog (Image: Santa Barbara Morning Press, December 18, 1918)

Betsy’s Way Back When book — 1918 — is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the fifth book in my series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time.
