Dec 05, 2019 12:33 PMah now i remember (and re-read the article). This man, built the boat, and sailed it from Japan. He arrived in CIH Nov 14th with assistance. Pretty sure he's at the boat now as we discuss this. It can be towed back to sea. Hope his keel isn't jacked up or his rudder, otherwise, it's probably just fine. This man is tough as nails. Sailing across the pacific from Japan is a gnarly task. Going from French Poly to Panama is the normal route, then you have to upwind sail from there to here...which just sucks. He cut his time down by taking that route, but had no wind and was 2 months behind his schedule. Had no rations left.

Dec 05, 2019 11:08 PMWow I can’t believe that’s the boat that guy sailed from Japan. I pictured it to be much bigger. Poor guy what a bummer to have this happen.

Dec 05, 2019 12:27 PMnone are abandoned. They all have owners. As a sailor, if we are away from the boat, and there is a storm, there is no way of knowing the hook dragged. It's always best to put out aft and stern anchors, with enough scope so your boat doesn't swing or drag. This is really sad to see....everytime. This is a good boat too. Probably still fine. Moorings are VERY expensive here ($30 to 50K), the marina's transient slips are good for I believe 28 days at $1 per foot per day. Very expensive also. Most put their boat on the hard in Ventucky, or move it to one of the many awesome marinas down there. But if you notice once mid october hits, the anchorage is moved further and further away from the wharf. My buddy lives on his 42' sail boat and his dink's motor crapped out, so he has to kayak about 1/2 NM into the marina now...yikes.

Dec 05, 2019 10:43 AMSeems like it happens every time we have a decent storm. Does anyone check up on the boats moored there and get rid of the ones that seem to be abandoned?

Dec 05, 2019 11:13 AMMoorings aren't cheap. If a boat owner can afford a mooring the boat is not abandoned. Also it's not called "Fool's Anchorage" for nothing.
