Victim Identified in Fatal Traffic Collision Near Mariposa Reina

The Coroner’s Bureau is releasing the name of the decedent from the fatal traffic crash on 7/7/22 on US-101 northbound, south of Mariposa Reina.

The decedent is 41-year-old Jesus Tamayo of Compton, Ca. CHP is investigating the crash.

Emergency responders are on the scene of a fatal traffic collision involving a semi-truck on Highway 101 northbound near Calle Mariposa Reina near Gaviota.

At 4:58 a.m., Santa Barbara County Firefighters and California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the area just south of the Mariposa Reina offramp. 

Crews discovered a semi-truck traveling on the highway had collided with a group of trees. The single occupant driver was pronounced dead on the scene. 

Hazmat crews also arrived on the scene to clean up diesel fuel leakage. 

A hard closure of northbound lanes was issued at Winchester Canyon. The number one southbound lane of Highway 101 at Mariposa Reina was closed for traffic to turn around causing traffic is also backing up on Highway 154 as an alternate route. 

At 11:30 a.m., all lanes were reopened, according to Caltrans.

CHP is investigating the cause of this collision.

  • Truck accident 101NB just south of Gaviota turn.. There is a truck accident 101 NB just south of Gaviota in median. I only saw briefly, trailer split open. Heard there may be a fatality. Noticed a bunch of semis pulled off to side on SB 101. Thats all I know.

  • The 154 is complete gridlock because of a fatality accident at Lorena Mariposa @Hollister and the one oh one northbound is still closed at 8 AM
