Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc will be officially renamed Vandenberg Space Force Base this coming Friday.
A ceremony will take place to redesignate the base and the 30th Space Wing as Space Launch Delta 30, under Space Operations Command, United States Space Force, according to base officials.
Officials state the new organization will allow squadron commanders to report directly to the Space Launch Delta 30 commander creating more efficiency.
The area was established in 1941 by the U.S. Army as Camp Cooke with the 5th Armored Division arriving in February and March 1942.
In 1956 the Army transferred the base to the Air Force as the United State's missile development progressed. Two years later the base was renamed Vandenberg AFB, in honor of General Hoyt Vandenberg, the Air Force's second Chief of Staff.
