After receiving a call from a previous board member, United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC) has partnered with Lane Farms to recreate a pumpkin patch at each of their clubs.
“I just know our members won’t be able to afford pumpkins or have the transportation to go. I want to make sure they all have a pumpkin to take home,” shared an anonymous past board member.
United Boys & Girls Clubs received the call after the past board member saw Lane Farms on the news. UBGC called Lane Farms to share what the donor wanted to do in hopes of having enough pumpkins set aside. To UBGC’s surprise, John and Ruth Lane donated the remaining 260 pumpkins to provide enough pumpkins for all members from Carpinteria to Solvang and Buellton and everywhere in-between.
“This community has always helped us out and for such a long time., they’ve been supporting us for 100 years, so we just want to give back the community,” shared John and Ruth Lane, owners of Lane Farms.
United Boys & Girls Clubs will use the fields next to their club locations to recreate a pumpkin patch. Members will get to go out in small groups and ‘pick’ their pumpkin and decorate them at their designed stations.
“It’s opportunities like this and donors and community members that make such a powerful impact on our member’s lives. These youth now get to have an experience that during this time might not have happened for them,” expressed Michael Baker, CEO of United Boys & Girls Clubs.
The donated money will now help with art supplies for pumpkin decorating, take-home goodie bags, and afternoon holiday snacks for members.
If you’d like to sponsor a member, UBGC still has 73 youth on a waiting list to attend the club. “This has been a difficult time for everyone. We have had to run a tight program with COVID-19 standards of 14:1 ratios, serving a lot fewer members than we would like and charging more than we’ve ever had to. We are thankful for our past board member as well as John and Ruth of Lane Farms for donating during this time,” added Baker.
