UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) confirmed there are no cases of the coronavirus on campus or in student housing amid growing concerns.

Rumors began spreading throughout the campus and online message boards about an ill student in the Santa Catalina dormitory, formerly known as Francisco Torres. Online posts stated the student was visiting family in Wuhan, China during winter break and returned ill. Wuhan is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak where 106 people have died.

UCSB students were in a panic over possibly being in contact with someone who had the illness as symptoms take a while to appear.

The Student Health Department of UCSB released a statement on Monday addressing these concerns stating any suspected cases have undergone screening as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

"There has been much concern about potential cases on campus. These inquiries have been thoroughly assessed and no cases have been identified on our campus or Santa Barbara County at this time; however we will continue to actively monitor the situation," the statement read.

Five people have tested positively for the coronavirus in the United States, with one in Los Angeles County and another in Orange County.

No cases have been reported in Santa Barbara County.

UCSB Confirms No CoronaVirus on Campus Amid Student Fears

The irony here is that rumors spread just like viruses. Put something on "social media" and it goes "viral". Release a virus into society and it will spread unhindered. Interestingly, precaution for such contagion is tethered to fear and thus, caution suffers from the Goldilocks dilemma. Fear too much and risk wide spread panic. Fear not enough and precaution will be denied fair warning. Unfortunately, authority figures always lean towards preventing panic at all costs. It's understandable how they collectively get there, however, it tends to be anchored in ignorance. Building precautions loses to extinguishing fear every time. And because of this, groups will ignore the very things they need to do (via the pareto principle) to protect 80% of the issues at hand.

Fears are justified because of too many unknowns. How many at UCSB come from China? How many are Chinese/ US Dual Citizens raised in China but enrolled as US Citizen applicants? On-line stats are incomplete reporting 18% Asian & 11% Unknowns in Undergrad Division; , 30% International students in Graduate Division.

UCSB Confirms No CoronaVirus on Campus Amid Student Fears

My Beijing native friend who lives in China put owns 7-homes here to safely park his money, just returned this weekend to observe CoronaVirus from this side of the Pacific. 50M Chinese are under quarantine. When we visited, he did not cough or sneeze. Who knows who is a carrier yet? Could I be? Don’t know.

Wash your hands, cover your mouth and so forth should go without saying, there are many who don't follow those rules. I'd like a reliable source for for how long it can linger on touched surfaces such as door knobs, light switches, restaurant counters/tables and so forth since, what the incubation time is, how the symptoms present on a timeline and other relevant info.

I’d welcome answers to the questions raised in your post. Where’s advice from County Health Director, or the Center for Disease Control? Available reports say spread via saliva and phlegm. I’d like to know if touching shared surfaces, etc, are also ways people spread it. Students are in close proximity.

Perhaps these students should focus on real health concerns like STDs, Alcohol and Drug overdoses, and mental health issues. These pose a serious risk to their heath and well being. Corona Virus does not.

UCSB Confirms No CoronaVirus on Campus Amid Student Fears

Half of UCSB campus is a party school. Only those UGs in STEM class seem serious students, and 35%+ are Asians. Don’t you know UCs are where too many lay-back Californians go buy 4-years from joining workforce at taxpayer expense? Top 4% of high school grads including basketweavers are guaranteed admission. Another waste of tax dollars. UCSB graduate & STEM UG students contribute to its positive reputation. Party On!

UCSB Confirms No CoronaVirus on Campus Amid Student Fears

The headline should read, "UCSB reports No CONFIRMED CoronaVirus on Campus Amid Student Fears". It's an important distinction, because no one at UCSB can say with absolute certainty that there is zero virus on campus at this time. The Lunar (Chinese) New Year was just his past weekend, with many students traveling down to Los Angeles and Orange County to celebrate with their families, many of which were busy mixing with among people from all over the southland as they shopped at crowded night markets and normally busy places like Ranch 99. Let's just wait a week or two before we sound all clear on this one.
