Two Trail Rescues on Friday

Source: Montecito Fire Department
Trail Rescue: At 3 p.m. Friday, Montecito Firefighters were called to the Hot Springs trail to assist a 61-year-old woman who suffered an ankle injury while hiking. AMR Santa Barbara took the patient to the hospital for further treatment. Thanks to Santa Barbara County Search And Rescue & AMR for their collaboration.

1st Call: Trail Rescue (above) - 2nd Call: Lost Hikers (11/26/21) - This was the first of two calls for service that we responded to yesterday. The second call was for two hikers lost near Cathedral Peak that had also run out of water and needed guidance coming down the trail. All hikers are safe and off the trails.

Nov 28, 2021 09:41 AMThe elderly woman with the ankle injury appears to be wearing "tennies" that are meant for toodling along at the beach, sidewalk, or sitting on a couch. When hiking, you should always/always wear appropriate footwear like ankle-high leather boots that have a steel shank. Wearing casual shoes when hiking often ends up in an injury, especially to older folks whose bones and balance is compromised and more prone to falls (yes, this is true). A good pair of boots helps prevent injuries and slips/falls. It's definitely worth it to invest a $140-300 for your own sake and for the sake of the rescuers. Notice that each and every one of the rescuers is wearing hiking boots.... not la-ti-dah flimsy sunny-day daisy-field walkers, which tend to be worn by those ending up being rescued all the time.

Nov 27, 2021 06:24 PMTen years from now when Climate Change has changed the dynamics of a survivable planet combined with the upheaval of our impending Civil War, there are going to be a lot of naively dependent people in for a rude awakening.
Survival of the fittest will become a very brutally real construct.

Nov 27, 2021 06:43 PMHave you already planned out how you’ll move the goal post in 10 years or…?
The Narcism of the doomsday crowd is rather humorous…

Nov 27, 2021 03:42 PMEven though Hot Springs is a fire road, it is very treacherous coming down if one is not wearing hiking boots or nubby shoes. Feet slide out from under you down the shale-covered fire road like ice. Be prepared when visiting the hot springs.

Nov 28, 2021 11:35 AMThanks for the advice, 3:42. And notice the sole of the person's shoe (on the stretcher). Looks pretty worn, no treads, to my eyes. As an older person, I know I am way less agile than even 10 years ago. I take my sticks even on front country hikes. Good shoes and sticks are important, especially for older hikers. This person injured an ankle.

Nov 27, 2021 02:45 PMThat's not S&R volunteers there. Taxpayer funded, heavily pentioned firefighters. But I get it when the tourists/relatives come to town. Many are pretty clueless about the outdoors.

Nov 27, 2021 05:33 PM@Basic, they are not paid by the hour or the task. They are on shifts, they are doing their jobs, and they are there when we need them. What's the complaint?
