From Jan. 1 through Dec. 1 last year, the county fire department responded to 45 calls related to fires at homeless encampments, Hazard said, and 12 of those incidents were wildfires.
Not trying to be facetious at all, but I think it might be a good Eagle Scout project to teach homeless folks how to build a safe camp fire. They are going to do it anyway, so why not try to get them to do it safely?
It can be done. My kids knew how to do it by the time they were 12, and haven't burned down a forest yet.
