A Santa Maria man wielding a knife in the 500 block of State Street was arrested by Santa Barbara Police on Sunday evening.

Officers arrived on the scene around 10:50 p.m. after witnesses called 9-1-1 about a suspect walking around with a large kitchen knife making verbal threats.

The suspect was located near State and Haley Streets and still had the knife in his hand when contacted by police, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

“Officers gave verbal orders for the subject to drop the knife. Subject refused and advanced towards Officers with the knife in hand. Officers were able to deescalate the situation safely by continually giving clear verbal orders. Subject dropped the knife and complied with Officers,” according to a statement by the Police Department.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Tudor Ortiz from Santa Maria. He was arrested without further incident and determined to be under the influence of a controlled substance.

Ortiz was booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail on a $10,000 bail and charged with being under the influence of a controlled substance (misdemeanor), possession of methamphetamine (misdemeanor), and possession of a fixed blade knife over 3 inches (misdemeanor).

  1. 6:57, When a deranged meth addict is approaching you while wielding a knife, de escalating the situation safely is a pretty admirable feat. Go take your anti-cop bs somewhere else, preferably up someplace uncomfortable. Thanks!
