Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Bakersfield man for a multitude of charges including kidnapping, firearm and domestic violence offenses.  On Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at approximately 9:30 p.m. deputies responded to Highway 101 near Los Alamos on a report of an armed suspect who had kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and was holding her at gunpoint in the vehicle. When deputies arrived in the area, they were able to locate the vehicle with additional information obtained from the reporting party.  A high-risk stop was conducted in the 1100-block of Betteravia Road where the suspect, 19-year-old Bryan McDermand-Wyland, was taken into custody. Through their investigation, deputies found that the vehicle driven by McDermand-Wyland was reported stolen out of King County, Washington. During a search of the vehicle, deputies located narcotics, stolen license plates, false identification cards and a loaded Cobra .380 caliber handgun believed to be the weapon used in the offense.

McDermand-Wyland was booked at the Main Jail for the following charges; kidnapping (felony), threatening crime with intent to terrorize (felony), preventing or dissuading a witness (felony), exhibit firearm (felony), possess stolen vehicle (felony), vehicle theft (felony), felon in possession of a firearm (felony), felon in possession of ammunition (felony), possession of a controlled substance (misdemeanor) and possession of false identification cards (misdemeanor). 1. BIGUGLY – Just in case you don’t know it, it’s already illegal for a 19 year old to even possess a firearm in California, let alone a convicted felon. The gun laws are already in place. They need to be enforced. You can melt YOUR guns down if you’d like…

  2. TJTOM, this is precisely why we need MUCH stiffer gun laws. Punish those who abuse their privilege. Make the punishments for gun violence fit the crime. I hate guns. If it were up to me I’d ban them all and melt them all down into scrap metal.
