Los Padres National Forest officials [on Monday] announced plans to remove and replace two concrete low-water road crossings on Davy Brown Creek and Munch Creek along Sunset Valley Road (Forest Road No. 8N09) in the Sisquoc River watershed. The crossings are in poor condition and are not functioning as intended due to high water-flow events, which have carried sediment and debris that have weakened these structures over the years.

The existing concrete crossings will be replaced with channel spanning bridges. The removal of the two creek crossings on Sunset Valley Road will require a complete road closure to excavate the concrete low-water crossings and import construction materials for the two new bridges.

During construction that begins this week and will conclude by March 30, 2022, campgrounds that are accessed from Sunset Valley Road will be temporarily closed for public and worker safety. The following trails and campgrounds are included in the closure:

  • Catway OHV Trail (Forest Trail No. 29W09)
  • Davy Brown Campground
  • Nira Campground

I hope they use the same contractor they used to repair the road along East Camino Cielo between Cold Springs and Romero in April of this year called BrayCo. I'd have a few choice words with those Montana boys.

The national forest service doesn't want us back there to start with. Lots of old jeep roads and access has been slowly closed off for maintenance since I was a teen ager.

Really sad that this closes the road in winter and early spring, when there's water and it's not hot. Hope they get it done in time for the spring backpackers and day hikers... Sad.

Nira is a widely used departure point for many school/group backpacking trips.
Not stated in this press release but according to the NEPA documents filed (107592_FSPLT3_4105) the real driver for this project was the desire to restore fish passage (steelhead, lamprey) as well as red-legged frogs. The 60% design drawings show use of pre-fabricated steel bridge decks, smart move but have no idea why this should force closure of the entire road for 7 months....
