There was a minor infestation of amateur astronomers tonight at Lake Los Carneros, out to try to catch a glimpse of Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks low in the west after sunset. It was perfect astronomy weather – swirling wind, scudding clouds, and rain. Clouds obscured the comet, but the Full Moon gave us a consolation prize: A full moonbow, partially double!

In the full moonbow image, that’s Jupiter near the top of the arch. In the double moonbow image, the phone camera managed to make it look like a normal daylight rainbow. Visually, it was much more subtle, but you could detect the greens and reds.
