Patient #361 of 2021: Allen’s Hummingbird

The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network received its first baby hummingbird of the season! This Allen’s hummingbird was found alone in the street by a citizen rescuer who was unable to locate its nest or parents. This fledgling is about the size of a cotton ball and weighs less than an ounce! The Center will care for this bird until it’s old enough to be released on its own.
Allen’s hummingbirds live year-round in Santa Barbara (including breeding season) making them one of the more common species the Center receives. SBWCN cared for over 50 Allen’s hummingbirds in 2020 alone.
During spring baby season, Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network typically receives thousands of injured and orphaned baby animals every year. One common misconception is that baby birds found on the ground need to be cared for; however, fledglings will often leave the nest as they develop, and their parents can typically be located in the area.
