In order to protect Santa Barbara Unified School District students, staff and families against the risks associated with COVID-19 and the new Delta variant known as B.1.617.2, the Board of Education approved on Thursday a Resolution requiring that all staff be vaccinated prior to the start of school, or undergo regular COVID testing.

The Resolution also recommends all eligible students and family members (those 12 years of age and older) to get vaccinated prior to the start of school on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.

The Resolution comes as a new surge in COVID-19 rates has created increasing alarm.

Santa Barbara Unified joins other educational institutions across the nation in putting policies in place to urge vaccinations.

“There exists a health emergency that requires action to safeguard students and staff against risks of infection, illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID 19,” the Resolution states. “The overwhelming scientific evidence has established that the now-Emergency Use Approval approved COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, and have been authorized for use by the Food and Drug Administration and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for all, except in the case of children under 12 years old and certain others. The Board has a responsibility to prevent the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 infections at SBUSD sites.”

The Resolution was approved at a Special School Board Meeting held on Thursday, August. 5, 2021.

For the employees that choose the “regular testing” instead of the vaccine, how often will it be done? Is there any data that gives guidance? Since one can get infected any day of the week, will they test every day? Will the employee bear the cost of the testing?

YES! Finally. Nice to see Santa Barbara at the forefront of science-based action.

The "emerging protocol" is twice weekly testing based on 2-3 day incubation period as viral load increases. Who cares what the cost. As long as the kids are safe.

Noted today that CNN is immediately firing unvaccinated employees entering their office buildings. United Airlines requiring all 67,000 workers to be vaccinated (but not passengers---how stupid is that?) Actually hundreds of hospitals and clinic systems now requiring all staff to be vaccinated. Why did that take this long?

till a pandemic hits and no one believes them and argues with them till they die on a respirator. hypo cryptical much?

go to school kids, be a doctor so everyone with a twitter handle can "debunk" you with chlorine tablets used to clean your fish tank.

OAITW - probably because there's a huge anti-vax movement among the $$$ families in this town. Bored stay at home millionaire moms "researching" youtube and listening to Jenny McCarthy then demanding "freedom." It's gross, but very real and very influential apparently.

Just got off the Pfizer earnings call. Reporting future net income of $33 billion from the vaccine alone. Great job! Also just announced price increase of 25% for EU nations for upcoming purchases. Nice. Also doing a fantastic job at shelving Biden's proposed TRIPS waiver which would have allowed for shared Intellectual Property so other countries could fast track and produce the vaccine for their own people. Profit wise, it's better to leave them unvaccinated and focus on booster shots to the wealthier nations. Need to keep an eye on Sinovac and Sputnik though as they continue to contract royalty agreements with many helpless countries, acting as saviors and good Samaritans. Under this strategy, future profits look strong making this a Buy opportunity. Shout out to Chancellor Merkel for spearheading the resistance.

From transcript of the Pfizer call from July 28.

Downloaded and did a word search. No mention of 25% EU price increase. Poor countries are being by Pfizergiven vaccine at not for profit. Trump Administration purchased 500 million doses at not for profit to donate to poor countries.

The arrangement Pfizer has with low income nations, moderate income nations is below:
"on the price per dose, we do not discuss our prices with each individual country, but we have given
our overall policy, which says that the high-income countries, they have comparable prices, but they vary only based on -- we give discounts to
these prices based on the volumes that are committed. Middle-income countries have approximately half of that price. And for the lower middle and low-income countries, we are providing our vaccines at a not-for-profit basis."

Another quote from the transcript
"Just last week, we
announced that the U.S. government has purchased an additional 200 million doses of the vaccine, bringing the total number of doses to be
supplied to the U.S. government under its existing supply agreement to 500 million. This is in addition to the 500 million doses that we agreed to
provide to the U.S. government at a not-for-profit price to be donated to the poorest countries in the world.
We anticipate that the significant amount of the remaining 2021 vaccine manufacturing capacity will be delivered to middle- and low-income
countries where we price in line with income levels or at a not-for-profit price. In fact, we are on track to deliver on our commitment to provide
this year more than 1 billion doses or approximately 40% of our total production to middle- and low-income counties and another 1 billion in 2022."

No mention in the call of Sinovac but here are its stats from a WHO study in Chile. Not that good. Only 80% at preventing death, 67% to prevent Symptomatic COVID.

It's about time. But the thought of my kid entering high school and having to wear a mask, two years into this crisis, when she is fully vaccinated, makes me grit my teeth.

High school kids are over the age of 12. They have had plenty of opportunity to get the vaccine. My daughter was fully vaccinated by the middle of June.

Kids are required a whole raft of inoculations to attend school, so the COVID vaccine should be added to the list. If the kids haven't had the vaccine, they should be denied entry to school. There's plenty of precedent for this.

I don't want my kid, going back to school next week, in the suffocating heat of August through October, having to wear a mask indoors. This is not a good learning environment.

Mask-free education for all high schoolers. Vaccine mandates for all eligible children. Expedite for the vaccine the younger kids already. This is what we should be demanding.

Fire every teacher, school administrator, and any other employees would refuse to get vaccinated. They are not the kind of people we need in our schools anyway. This is a great opportunity to flush out the crap from the system.

So, I feel you. My kid STARTED high school in this pandemic, and has had all of 2 months of in person high school. However, Delta is very contagious. You can contract it and spread it, even if vaccinated. I think the high schoolers will be fine wearing masks indoors at school. Besides, many of these students (like mine), have younger siblings who aren't eligible to be vaccinated. It certainly beats virtual high school, by a factor of a million.

the resolution, some of the WHEREAS statements are stale news that should’ve been evident at time of publish and vote. Vaccinations are good, this one is neither a vax or good. “Testing” is mostly a joke. “Testing“ is conditioning your child to routine inspections by agents of the government. It’s a dark future that’s on the horizon, all for the sake of “health”

The SBUSD partnered with a for profit corporation called Maxim Healthcare Services, who make money off of jailing, deporting and/or hospitalizing children. The SBUSD is run by people committing crimes. They have no right to demand vaccines or face masks- they should be in jail.

If teachers want a paycheck and full benefits most of us don’t have (free healthcare!) then yes, they have options: 1) get the vaccine and resume your work, 2) opt out and get tested constantly (I will personally volunteer to run Q-tips up their noses effectively for proper assessment, and I know how because I am a physician), or 3) find another line of work, not including filing for unemployment - that’s already been maxed out, sorry!

No one’s being forced into anything.

It says "staff" not teachers.
Of coursae the teachers union doesn't want its memebers to go back to work.
The bigger the check the union can get out of the district, the bigger the dues are, the bigger the union bosses paycheck can be.
Duh.
My cousins were UAW all the way and were big in shop level union leadership until they priced themselves out of a job in the Carter years
