Santa Barbara local Kayla Day is currently competing in the U.S. Open after winning the US Junior Open last year. The 18-year-old became the first American girl to win a junior Grand Slam since Samantha Crawford’s win in 2012. She currently stands at 128 in the WTA rankings.
Day is the reigning U.S. Open junior champion and the reigning USTA Girls’ 18s National Champion.
On Wednesday, she put her skills to the test against 25-year-old Shelby Rogers, who was able to beat her in three sets. Day lost the first set 6-2, won the second 4-6, and lost the third 6-4. At only 18 years old, however, the confident left-hander still has plenty of time to rise in the pro rankings. You can see her stats here.
Day is scheduled to play in a doubles match with Caroline Dolehide on Thursday morning.
The U.S. Open will continue through September 10. Here is the full TV schedule. Live streaming is also available.
