Santa Barbara High School Principal Promoted to Superintendent of HR

Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. John Becchio as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. Dr. Becchio serves as the current principal of Santa Barbara High School and will continue in that role until the end of the year. He will start in his new position on July 1, 2018.

“John Becchio is highly regarded for his professional experience in building partnerships and leading accomplished teams,” said Superintendent Cary Matsuoka. “The qualities and skills that made him an effective principal will serve our entire district well as he leads our human resources department.”

The selection of Dr. Becchio followed a competitive and collaborative recruitment process comprised of human resources staff, principals, and district officials. Becchio has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Concordia University and a Masters in Education Administration from California State University Northridge. He has 14 years of experience in education administration. His service as
principal of both Santa Barbara Junior High School and Santa Barbara High School provided extensive Human Resources experience. He has also served on both certificated and classified
negotiation teams. His writing on “The Evaluation Process, Administrator Feedback, and Teacher Self-Efficacy” has recently been accepted for publication in Journal of School Leadership.

“I have dedicated the last twenty years to the students and families of Santa Barbara Unified School District and during that time I have come to know first-hand that the professionals who have served
with me are some of the best people anywhere,” said John Becchio, Ed.D. “I look forward to serving those professionals in my new role as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.”

Dr. Becchio will assume his new position following Mitch Torina as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources who will retire at the end of the year after twenty years of service with Santa Barbara Unified School District. Becchio is bilingual in Spanish and English. He is married to his wife Susan, and together, they are raising three children David, Braden, and Brooklyn in Santa Barbara. In his spare time, Becchio enjoys baseball, golf, camping, woodworking, cooking and reading.

  1. This is not an unusual career move for someone who wants someday to become a district superintendent. The hiring process was open and competitive, so congratulations Mr Becchio. May you continue your interest in enhancing educational effectiveness.
