Public Health Officials Urge Vaccinations for Preteens

Source: Public Health Department

Preventing diseases that can spread in our communities is the foundation of public health. Next week, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department is joining with the California Department of Public Health in recognizing February 27- March 5 as “Preteen Vaccine Week,” focusing on protecting adolescents against dangerous vaccine-preventable diseases.

Vaccines are our best bet when it comes to giving our children safe and effective protection from infectious diseases. By ensuring our kids stay up to date on recommended vaccinations, we are helping protect our children, families, and community from serious, life-threatening illnesses.

Preteens need vaccines against whooping cough (Tdap), HPV, and meningitis (MenACWY), when they are 11-12 years old. The COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for those 5 and older to protect themselves against COVID-19. Incoming 7th graders must also provide proof of having received the whooping cough shot and two doses of chickenpox vaccine before starting school. Additional meningitis vaccines are recommended when teens are 16 years old. Flu vaccine is also recommended for everyone 6 months or older, not just preteens and teens.

Under the Affordable Care Act, most health plans are required to cover CDC-recommended vaccines at all ages without charging a deductible or copayment. Any child without coverage should be able to get vaccinations without a financial burden. Parents can contact their health care provider or local public health department for information about the Vaccines for Children Program (VFC), which provides free vaccines to eligible kids.

  1. Due to how much better their immune systems are at preventing and responding to a covid infection the benefit the vaccine provides young children is negligible, particularly compared to that of an adult. When there is barely any “benefit”, it only takes a small or rare “cost” to change the outcome of the cost-benefit equation. Also, there’s this: https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/28/health/pfizer-vaccine-effectiveness-kids-omicron/index.html

  2. Thank you for name calling with out adding a single thing to the conversation. My1:10pm post if accurate, backed by data and the CDC+FDA, I even provided a cnn.com link. What exactly is the “sesame street” reasoning about why there is no covid vaccine for young children. Do you have a “main street” reasoning for why there is no covid vaccine for young children? The Muppets are all ears!

  3. Like how the State of CA “went rogue” and bucked the CDC’s recommendations enacting stricter measures themselves? Or how LA “went rogue” and bucked the State’s recommendations enacting stricter measures themselves? Or how Florida “went rouge” only to have the CDC model their current guidance off exactly what Florida’s been doing the past year? Yea, have to be a real whack-job conspiracy theorist to think there’s a chance our local health department and school districts might keep kids in mask just a little longer. I mean summer is almost here so why not just keep them on a little longer….

  4. Sac – The school board is not going to do their own thing…hopefully though, considering we’ve seen their speed (glacial) on so many things (school reopening’s!), it doesn’t take them too long to agree/vote/whatever and make this transition. But where is the logic in waiting till an arbitrary date…why not just say no mask mandate effective immediately?

  5. I don’t think ANY of you are experts on this subject, but argue as if know everything, and the other person is unequivocally wrong. I can’t imagine having the amount of time some of you regular commenters have, to be on here ALL DAY arguing. Good grief.

  6. “On an age-adjusted basis, Florida’s Covid death toll is 22nd in the country—better than that of New Jersey, New York and other jurisdictions whose citizens suffered harsher lockdowns. California’s age-adjusted Covid death toll is 30th—that is, along with Florida, in the middle of the pack ” https://www.wsj.com/articles/florida-covid-death-toll-age-adjusted-desantis-11636407924

  7. SFGAC – you don’t have to be an “expert” to dispute baseless claims and demand evidence. If you make a claim with no evidence, or the evidence proves you wrong, you are “unequivocally wrong.” No need to be an expert.

  8. California did better than Florida. When you account for age it’s pretty close, but California did better. Pre-vaccine Florida was doing better by age, which truly speaks to the efficacy of the vaccine. If you are over 65 getting vaccinated was an absolute no brainer.

  9. Per SacJon’s logic: “If we had 1 less death than Florida, we did “better.”” this is the type of erroneous covid above all else and be damned with the consequences thinking that led to our costly and disastrous response. If 1 less death it’s all worth it!?? How many additional overdose or suicide deaths as a result of our restrictions? How many missed treatments, cancer diagnosis, etc. all leading to shorter lives and additional deaths? How many years behind the curve are many kids due to missed and remote school? The toddlers and young children who missed development milestones because they were forced to wear masks? According to SacJon, all worth it if we saved just one life from covid (regardless if that life later OD’d because of the forced isolation and the shutdown of their livelihood)! We did better!! (as long as you don’t look at all these other things)

  10. BICYCLIST – thanks, lol! The thing with deleted comments is though, even if my comment is perfectly acceptable and compliant with the rules, it will be deleted if it is made in response to a violating comment. That’s usually how I get the same number as Voice.

  11. Sesame Street would likely be a good fit for you CanyonKid. After all, you do call yourself “kid”…
Over 6billion doses of MNRA Covid vaccines have been administrated in the last 16 months. Do you know how to count and use decimals? If you do – and I assume you do, you can read and study the actual efficacy figures and peer reviewed scientific studies and get back to us on why your “educated” conclusion is that they are unsafe and unproven… we’ll wait.

  12. “Do their own research” Do you mean like watching Robert F Kennedy anti vax videos on Youtube? When 99 out of 100 dentists say it is good to get your teeth cleaned regularly – you are going to side with that 100th dentist.

  13. Let’s everyone take a step back and just celebrate that they are no longer going to require masks in schools March 12th! Seems like saying that’s effective immediately is more logical, but at least it’s a finish line!

  14. watch this cause an explosion of arm chair virologists.
its because childrens immune systems are different than adults. so they have to check the vaccine efficacy. plus since their organs are smaller, less developed. liver etc, they cant filter in the same capacity as adults.
so it has nothing to do with “safe or not” it has everything to do with accurate and what is needed. not over dosing and not under dosing.
it has nothing to do with the flat out lie that children dont need the vaccine because the virus doesnt affect them.
